Would a smart American truck driver hauling a vanload of nothing interesting ever route a trip from northern Maine to Minnesota via Canada? Or would that driver always go south along the Great Lakes, to avoid the border crossings?
Thoughts?

Company I used to work for ran northern route from NH to WI. It's longer thru the state's, quite a bit.

This driver wouldn't. However, load planners absolutely will. Another case of desk jockeys knowing what's best. It is much shorter going through Canada though.

We use to do it that way but not sure you can do that anymore. Today you have the speed limiters on Canada truck. So you might be I violation of that law. Then their the proplem of HOS. You have to run their HOS laws. That might no be a problem because they can run more hours then we can.
Then I for get what it was called but you could get paperwork for pulling a loaded sealed trailer thru Canada but I'm not sure they allow it anymore. Or you may have to get a bond on the load. They very the seal when you cross into Canada. Then you have to get the bond cancel before leaving Canada. So they make sure your trailer still has same seal number. If I remember it cost money to put trailer In Bond then cancel the Bond.TallJoe Thanks this. -
You can run the US HOS while in Canada... you will just have to remember to have taken 24 hours off in the last 14 days and carry 14 plus current of logs.
They will have to file the paperwork for the crossing... so in the long run they route will stay US.TallJoe Thanks this. -

Anything going by truck from the lower 48 to Alaska would go through Canada, no different going from ME to MN if you wanted to save some miles.
