Since I am a mechanic, am I allowed to sign off on the DVIR as "mechanic" if I fix anything during the pre-trip on my service truck? So far this has never been an issue since I never have any defects.

    Just wondering for future reference.

If you find something on a pretrip you get it fixed or fix it yourself. No dvir. You fill out the dvir, if something is wrong at the end of the shift. If you end up fixing it you can sign the form. If nothing is found wrong you no longer have to fill one out. That's how it here down here in the U.S.

I'm just a shade-tree mechanic, and I sign my own DVIR's when I'm the one who fixed an issue I found and scribbled onto one. If I take it to a shop, the "signature" is just me writing the name and town of the shop that did the work. I've never had any issues doing that.

    [Docket No. FMCSA-2012-0336]

    RIN 2126-AB46

Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance; Driver-Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR)

AGENCY: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), DOT.

    ACTION: Final Rule.

SUMMARY: FMCSA rescinds the requirement that commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers operating in interstate commerce, except drivers of passenger-carrying CMVs, submit, and motor carriers retain, DVIRs when the driver has neither found nor been made aware of any vehicle defects or deficiencies. This rule also harmonizes the pre- and post-trip inspection lists. It responds in part to the President’s January 2011 Regulatory Review and Reform initiative, removing a significant information collection burden without adversely impacting safety. The Agency also makes a technical change to section 396.11 to eliminate redundant language.

We aren't talking about whether or not a DVIR is necessary when no defects are found, but rather who signs off that the repairs have been completed.

First, you check out the truck, and repair anything that needs fixing.

Then you do the official pre-trip inspection (required in Canada) and write up the (required) DVIR.

    See how easy that is?

Sure...if it is fixed right away. If I have to tell dispatch I'm taking the day off to fix anything, though, it gets written up...because that generally means I wasn't able to fix it immediately and it is going to sit at least overnight until places open up and I can get the parts and pieces I need.

I've done both ways. Mechanic sign or I've signed.
    Mechanic always signs dot inspections.
