Apparently, you don't understand digital technology. The recording MUST be saved in order to "go back" to the few seconds leading up to the "recorded" incident. If the camera has 8 mb of memory, that's enough "saved" footage to cover an hour or more, and those files exist until such time as they are overwritten...meaning the memory gets filled up, and the OLDEST file is written over. If the company has it set up so that only 20 seconds of footage are reported, they are likely 10 second files, with 2 files protected so they aren't overwritten until they are uploaded. The non-incident files still exist on the camera, as long as the camera hasn't been running long enough to overwrite them. In other words, if the upload happened quickly enough following an incident, the company could go back and grab additional files from immediately before and after the event that was triggered.

If you think it ONLY records a 20 second loop, you're sorely mistaken.

Exactly. The number of triggered events add up...might be only 1 or 2 per week where you hit a pothole as you're changing radio station, taking a sip of coffee, checking your directions, etc...and so when that opposing counsel gets those through the discovery process, they turn those 1-2 videos per week into a 5 minute long video showing nothing but you being "distracted" going down the road. That paints you as a dangerous driver who should be removed from the road, even though the forward-facing camera showed their client change lanes 2' off your front bumper hard on the brakes trying to make their exit from the left lane. Instead of their client being 100% at fault for the wreck, they successfully shift 30% of the blame onto YOU because the jury now thinks you are a menace to society. They didn't get to see any footage of you doing what you're supposed to be doing...only the rare "incidents" that were triggered.

Driver facing cameras are a whole lot different then a camera up in the corner of a workshop, or a camera pointed at a cash register. Dispatchers aren't strapped to a chair with a camera 4 feet away pointed at their face for 11 hours a day. Most people under video surveillance are free to easily step away for a moment, at a moments notice, to adjust themselves or whatnot. And even those who are not able to step out of a cameras view for whatever reason, are not typically the sole subject of view of said camera anyway. And it aint in their face.

Another big difference is Driver facing cameras have the video constantly monitored through a computer algorithm specifically designed to flag possible driver wrong doings which can actually be used to fire them or even land them in jail. All via some desk jocky or LEO "Monday morning Quarterbacking" a drivers split-second life or death decision. That's not the same scrutiny a Walmart associate faces while stocking toilet paper under a benign camera 30 feet away, possibly pointed in his general direction.

    That should read 8GB.
8MB will save a few minutes, but not an hour. At least not at a quality that would really show anything useful.

The Swift cameras have 8GB of storage, and we were told this a long time ago by Scott Barker.

The camera I had could save around 10 hours of video with a 64GB card, but half was reserved for 'saved files' in a separate folder. That was at 1080P resolution.

So if it takes 32GB to store 10 hours worth of video, how much do you think 8MB would save?
    Not much.

To throw this in here. My GoPro records 5 min files in a 20 min loop. Can be set to record 1 min files in a 4 min loop. So there are constantly 3 files saved and fourth recording. As the fourth one hits the last second, the first file is deleted and a new recording starts.

What I'm trying to point out is that my own personal camera doesn't fill up the memory card and then delete the first file. It only records a set time and that's it. Now I'm not sure if swift has theirs set up to record the whole cards but.. it's possible they don't.

As far as storage, my 128gb card will hold 8hrs of 1080p video with audio. 8gb will hold quite a bit if that is how they record it.

I had the driver facing camera for many months before that portion was turned off. Probably at least 6 months.
In that time several videos were turned in, I think around 8 or 9.

I was not called out for any one of them. They were all resolved without contacting me by my DM.
Some big potholes while in a yard and I wasn't belted in. A few hard braking events when a light went red and I decided to stop instead of going through - as I was doing the speed limit I might add.

No one could have made a case against my driving habits with what was shown on those videos.
But I could imagine where some drivers could be caught off guard at too many critical times to show that their attention was not where it should have been at the moment.

If your 128GB card could only hold 8 hours while my 64GB did 10, I would say that your camera did not compress the video nearly as much.
That is a good thing if you need to grab a plate number from a single frame.

    Friday Thanks this.

Yeah well I can get almost a whole day on that card or only three hours depending on settings. Usually it's at 1080p superview at 60fps and yeah, I can go frame by frame and grab those easy. I've tried the 4K at 60fps but really the quality jump isn't worth it for our purposes.

    Moosetek13 Thanks this.
