Incidentally, your washer pump lasts a lot longer when it isn't in contact with methanol 24/7. -
Mix a good squirt of dawn in a half jug of washer fluid when it's empty. Dawn doesn't damage rubber seals or cause them to expand, and its biodegradable. No damage to my freightliner in four years now.

I just squirt windex on the windshield and let it sit for couple minutes. Hit the wipers and its clean - Ive taken the little nozzle things on the factory squitrers all the way off, just have the rubber hose squirting fluid, its like a small water hose now -
EZ Money Thanks this. -
I don't use my wipers ever for bugs. It's a loosing battle here on the prairies. Besides the standard bug population, every time I go by a slough it almost rains bugs, especially at night.
I just wait until the next time I stop and use the window squeege, most places here put soap in the buckets. -
I've been doing this for as long as I remember during Summer time in Freightliners and Volvos. A little squeeze of Dawn and water found at the fuel pumps. Very effective and cheap. The Soap splashes on the mirrors, that's the only thing I don't like about it. It is not only about money saved, which it does, but how effective it is removing the bugs on the windshield.
So far, it never ruined my windshield fluid pump.Last edited: Jun 4, 2017

By not putting in the washer container. I use soap with hot water and soak it then once I get the crude and dead bugs off, I wipe the windshield with a mixer of glass cleaner concentrate and water to get the soap off.
When I was growing up, this was the most common myth around, a lot of windshields would smear when the cold weather rolled around with soap in the container, even a couple drops, -
I spray OXY on the windshield when I stop. It makes the bugs slide off the windshield as it contains degreasing/caustic agents. I pick it up at Dollarama Mayflies were on the lake Friday so I expect the swarms in a week or so. North Bay which is way down south of me gets Mayflies so bad they about shovel them off the sidewalks some years and stink!!!!
