Roll off truck for a new driver? Whats it like?

    1. Got my license recently, seems like no one wants to hire me. Always hire someone more qualified

      Spoke to owner of a roll off waste/disposal business today, I believe he is willing to take me with no expierence and even train me on manual

      Anyone can tell me about the job a bit more?
    All I really know is they use mack trucks,
    Will it be hard to learn manual?

    What is the job like?

    Not difficult at all. Depending on if its a hook or cable, there will be 2 or 3 hydrologic controls in the cab, you pick up dumpsters and del them, take full ones to transfer stations or a landfill and dump them. If you are lucky enough to have a auto tarp (mounted to the truck) tarping is easy, if not... still easy, mesh tarps dont weight much, secure with bungies and off ya go. Did you test in a manual? If not you may be restricted to automatics, (check your cdl....

    Tested in automatic,

    Doesnt matter in canada.. I can drive either or

    Lucky you. Manuals are pretty easy, take your time, and i mean that, trying to rush through the gears will get you every time.

    How long will it take me to learn, approxiamtely.... Obviously everyone learns at a different pace

    If your a quick study the basics can be learned in a few hours. Mastering it is just time in the seat. If he starts with floating, ask him to teach you double clutching as well. You dont need to know how to float, but you do need to know how to dc...

    And how to hook up bins unload bins? How long?


    I told him I dont know manual and he told me to come in anyway...usually thet hang up or I dont bother applying

    I dont even expect to get paid for to learn.

    Well see what happens

    Well you should get paid no matter what. (Jmo) the basics of picking up and dropping dumpsters is simple, 30 mins and you will understand it. Less if its a hook truck, just like the gears, mastering rolloff is just a matter of time

    I ran roll-off in a Mack with manual transmission for 10 years.

    A Mack with a Maxidine transmission is the slowest shifting truck I have ever driven. You gotta take your time. Its not the quick shifting you hear from other trucks. When you come out of a gear, you gotta have a pause in neutral, before pulling it into the next gear.

    Loading a roll-off can, can be tricky. You've only got about an inch or so to play with & you cant see the end of the rails on the boom (truck) to know if they are matched up with the rails on the can. You gotta learn how to back up to it & get you boom rails between the rails on the can.
    You also gotta make sure your straight. If you dont get straight & you start pulling that can up, its gonna just the rails on the boom & sometimes will get stuck. Its not easy to master it, although you will in time.
    If you dont have your boom all the way to the ground & you get the boom rail on top of the rollers on the can, your gonna flip that can or break a cable.

    Over all, this is something that takes time to learn, but obviously, there are a lot of roll-off drivers & they all started right where you are. So, it can be done, just pay attention & take your time.
