YOU might be happy lugging up a hill at 1200 rpm's, down where torque is good, but your engine ISN'T. If that temperature climbs above 210°F downshift until you find a gear you can climb steadily at around 1500-1700 rpm's. That's because the engine fan needs higher rpm's to effectively cool the engine.

Now that you are eastbound on I-40, you can simply run to OKC and catch I-44 to St. Louis. Another option is to catch US-54 in Tucumcari, NM Northeast all the way to Wichita, then catch I-35 northeast to Kansas City and I-70. I have gone either way plenty of times.

If you run I-44 do yourself a favor and stop at the Petro in Joplin, MO for a 10 if it's in your schedule, at least a 30. The folks that own the I-80 truck stop in Iowa also own the Joplin Petro. Don't let your jaw hit the floor when you walk through the doors.

Sure you don't mean Oak Grove, Mo on 70 just passed Kansas City? I know they own that too. My current load is a Westvaco load to Joplin. Will be there Sunday delivering, so I'll probably be staying in Joplin. Will check it out.

I haven't been to the Oak Grove location. Definitely check out Joplin. I loved to take trainees to Joplin and the original I-80. Still haven't yet been on a schedule to check out the truck museum in Iowa.
