Mine used to be about $ 6500 year when I start in 2008. Again truck was paid off, trailer payed off now I have been driving since 1973 had been grandfathered in CDL whenever it was inacted. Hauling cars requires more coverage than freight. In about six years your rates will come down. I run in 500 mile radius. I carry electrical components for the utility's companies in my home and surrounding states. Also electrical components to the steel mills. Insurance actuaries actually come up with the rates. The best companies want to work with the least risk.

Geez try to learn some stuff and i started an insurance war. Skate- I don't want to accuse you of anything but I'm curious why you are so adamant about this? Do you want to keep new comers out of the industry? you afraid people will take your business away? Or do you think the new comers are low ballers and it kills the per mile rate ( may be some truth to that ) .

So i just did another Progressive look with ALL of the coverage as good as possible, even added two of my goosenecks and a 25 ft enclosed bumper. The polcy would be 11,500 year with a 3k down payment and monthly pays for 9 months at 945. I wander if there system is jacked and certain things flag the wrong price or if you have a point anywhere it zaps you?
Heck i remember when i was 16, just bought a new 2001 Gixxer 600. Full coverage and i had 9 points ( whistle ) was 8k for the year. That year sucked bad. So it has got to be the perceived risk and what the cost would be to others if ??? screwed the pooch. Any-who. Keep this going. Learning a lot

    Question alert.
So with ELD, If i run all day and get home and I'm out of time. Then the wife wants to load up with the kids and get dinner, groceries ex.. in the same truck i just ran in. What would i do? How will ELD work for hotshot rigs which are dual purpose in many cases. OR if I'm home and not running just using the truck as the family vehicle, will the ELD have an option or can i just unplug it. Also, since i use my OBDII port to monitor lots of stats on the truck, I wonder if there will be other options of not having to have it plugged in all the time. Man i'm little worried about them ELDs.

I'm thinking within a month or possiby two the ELD mandate will be put off for another 2 years or abolished completely. Already seeing the scales tipping that direction. My suggestion, don't get in a rush to jump in, wait and see what happens.

I don't know where that Insurance quote that skate board added to this thread originated from but I'd just about bet it's for someone trying to start out with multiple trucks (like maybe 5 or 6). There's just no way that's a quote for new start up single truck operator. Or there's a lot more to the story? For instance the guy has a horrible horrible driving record, dui's, reckless driving, etc. Iwork with a lot of new guys here in my business and I can tell you for a fact that quotes for new start ups, with decent driving records, are running from $10k to $14k on average. And yeah that's even to high, considering just a few years ago quotes for new start ups where averaging $7k to $8k.

And as far as starting with a F250. Just my 2 cents but I'd recommend you start out with a truck that has dual rear wheels.

Well from what I've read in the 1700 page ELD mandate the use of your work/personal vehicle the ELD must remain plugged in at all times, and the driver is to log in as personal conveyance while not hauling any load. Here's my question, that is actually law. If you are traveling lets say on vacation to another state using your work/personal vehicle your log will indicate off duty status personal conveyance however according to the law if you fuel your work/personal vehicle that is considered performing work related activity on your vehicle and you are required to go on-duty not driving. So this will break up your 34 hour restart if you left for vacation the day after your 60 hour week is up. Now I've never read a case where this was enforced by DOT however it is the law and if you find yourself faced with a go getter kinda officer they can write you on that. My point is this whole ELD mandate was not thought out very well, essentially it was rushed into law and not geared to hot shot freight and car haulers. Since we are not permitted to remove our DOT numbers from a vehicle regardless of personal use we would be visible to DOT. If you unplug your eld it will register and log on your truck report as disconnected and DOT might want to know why it was not active and could cause undue annoyance by DOT. Just some FYI for ya

When you're using the truck for personal conveyance, you wouldn't change the log, you would not log fueling. I use my truck for personal conveyance 99% of the time that it's driven because I'm working in the office all the time and rarely ever go out on the road these days.

During personal conveyance usage I go right by the scales in any state I happen to be in if I'm not pulling a trailer. The only time I'm pulling a trailer usually though is when I'm dragging my fifth wheel toyahuler behind. Every so often I'll hook on to my Hotshot trailers and go pick up something that I bought. In that event Ill pull through the scales outside of California. California doesn't want pick up trucks in their scales. I've been clear to TX, and Iowa on personal conveyance pulling my Hotshot trailers, and with stuff on the deck. I pull into port of entry's and scale houses. When asked I tell them personal conveyance, they may have a few questions but they always let me go.

Just read the thread. Yeah there's probably a little bit more to that story. Here's the thing about insurance agents, they're essentially a Broker, the way it's suppose to work is they're suppose to shop around and find you the best quote. Unfortunately though many insurance agent get paid percentage so if they find a sucker that'll slap that big money down, it's like they hit the fricken lottery. That may be what's happening here? It's the same at dealerships, the salesman runs your credit and comes back shaking his head and tries to stick you with a huge interest rate. That's because the higher interest rate he Gets you to accept, the more the loan company gives him for Reeling in the sucker.

Another possibility is, the poster is one of those guys that think more Owner Operators coming into the industry are going to take work away from him. You know the type, the same guys that tell people inquiring about the business that they don't start their truck up for less than $2.50 or $3.00 a mile, just so the new guys will sit around and pass on fair paying loads, while he grabs them up. Been seeing posts designed to scare new guys away and try to screw them up for many many years now. And anybody can print a blank insurance certificate online these days, or edit the one that they have. Not saying this guy did this, just saying it's very possible. Joe Blow decides he wants to be a Owner Operator, he finds a trucking forum online and starts doing his homework. He see's this insurance post and says to himself, Well forget that idea.
