The sears store at the mall was torn down and two new stores are taking its place....a sporting goods store or two.
And with all the warehouses here to supply the east coast there are tons of jobs in warehouses and fulfillment centers for those online shoppers. All those internet orders get filled at a warehouse somewhere.....here. I am two hours west of New York City. All of the cities in eastern PA have huge warehouse facilities.
There are an amazing number of jobs available here.....versus no jobs available where I lived in n.w. TN. a few years ago.
And most of the jobs here are full time.
I am at the crossroads of I-81, I-84, I-380, and nearby is I-80, and a toll highway. It is truck traffic all day long on all these highwaysheaded toward New York. We have what New York wants! -

You are witnessing the giant shift from bricks and mortar to online. The dinosaurs here who don't order online because perceived computer hazards or misdirected shipments are in the distinct minority. There is the associated shift in logistics that is impacting trucking in a huge way. The stream of goods is moving in a completely different way, and trucking is fundamental in satisfying that need.
When I go online to shop for something, I get precisely what I need, not settle for something that might or might not be on a shelf. And usually at a better price.
I needed a wheel and tire to match one on my RV. In minutes I found several suppliers online, actually picked it up because it was close and fast. In the past I would have paid at least double and waited at least a week for a local RV dealer to get one.diesel drinker, Toomanybikes, mjd4277 and 1 other person Thank this. -
There's room for both, online and brick/mortar stores. Some things work well online, some don't. Some people like online shopping for many things, some only use it for hard-to-find items.
The Walmarts of the world may see a slow and steady drop in walk-in traffic but there will be a limit to how much brick-mortar can be reduced. Local stores will continue to serve a real need for those who want it TODAY, not tomorrow or the next day into the foreseeable future.
You can always find many things online for a specific shopping list, but inevitably there's always a few basic items that are just better to buy locally. Sears and K-marts going the way of the dinosaur is not necessarily a harbinger of the future for all retail. Adaptations will be required and they will have to be acted on quickly, not 2-3 years too late. Many valuable lessons are being learned from the demise of Sears and K-mart and others. Those with the best upper management will succeed in balancing online and brick-mortar.okiedokie and Pumpkin Oval Head Thank this. -
