I've done it in an 8 spd. Shift 1, 2, 3, splitter up to go into the low hole, then to 5th. Seemed to work the same as normal.

By running in high range in a lower gear, you're increasing the torque load on the back half of the tranny above what it's designed to handle. Plus, as pointed out, that gear in the main isn't designed for extended running. You're unlikely to hurt anything using it under light throttle, but extended high torque will cause problems.

18spds will do it too but like everyone says. Its not recommended with weight. Ive done it when rolling up to a stop light bobtail but then it changes and inteasd of dropping to 4th I just roll her over to the ghost hole there and skiddal.

Back when I was going through divorce years ago, I hauled Magnetite into the coal mines. We had International 2575 series with 400 Cummins & 12513 trans. We only used that option if already near the top of the hill and just needed a little extra. That is NOT something I would recommend for everyone though, Like many other things common horse is needed.

I think what we're getting at is don't use the LO position when on the high side of a 13/18. Just stick with the H-pattern when in high range. Something to do with lack of lubrication or too light of bearings to handle the speed/torque when in that gear.

That's the "granny gear" isn't it? I've only ever heard what other people here are saying. Not a good position to be in.

When I was going through Big truck truckin' school back in the 1980's, an instructor showed us how to get into the "cornering gear", so called because it seemed better than dropping into low range,
(too low) or the first high range gear, (too high).
The forbidden cornering gear seemed just right.
However, ..... it is NOT recommended to use it.

I talked to a mechanic who knew Big truck transmissions inside and out. That guy could open a transmission and tell you how the driver drove the Big truck by the conditions found inside. He said using the forbidden gear may not seem like it's doing any harm, but the problems will likely occur at an earlier mileage than the same transmission type that the driver didn't use that gear.
