Just a fast note...15 years ago when a driver applied, he would 1st) meet with two or more drivers who would just sit down and talk with him...from this they would give a recommendation. 2nd) the applicant would be interviewed by 2 drivers, 2 office workers, and 2 managers of the local terminal. If he was recommended, his back ground and references would be checked, pysical performed thoroughly and he would lastly be interviewed by some one from regional(usually over the phone) and the final decision was made. This system produced an experienced and motivated driver who fit nicely in to the culture, usually. Today, wal mart, like many trucking companies do not want experienced drivers. They want newer drivers attracted by pay who can be micromanaged using on board tech to make them drive, perform and act as the management wants. (wheel holders) Why pay an experienced driver who is used to living a truckers life when you can get newbies who follow the obc instructions and not make any hard decisions.
For decades, we were not allowed to talk about our wages. They wanted drivers who were looking for a place to work with prestige, teamwork and pride. Now, they blast our pay over radio and magazine adds. They want people who(like the post office, govt workers, and other high paid jobs) who are only in it for the money...a shackling agreement. This makes them easy to subjugate.
Truck driving is not all about the pay. It is equipment, benefits, support, training, communication, determination, respect, teamwork, an ability to work on your own without assistance, experience, knowledge, loneliness, self motivation, safety, long hours, deprivation, trust, being savy, health issues, flexibility and much more. If you only want to drive for money...maybe truck driving is not for you.
Sorry to preach:( ....I know of several drivers who were hired with 2 years experience...it is the future here.

Well after a suit for not hiring qualified drivers they changed there requirements. All one needs is 30 months experience with no more than 2 tickets and a decent psp. That's far from what use to be required. But it proves that they aren't looking for what use to be a great professional driver. Now they are just looking for new ##### to fill postions.

You can apply to another dc even if you don't make it at another. Although i failed my physical over in spring valley and was told to wait a year as well, i got hired out of sutherland less than 2 months later

You are so right on everything you said. At my D.C. it's the same hiring practice. I know of a man who has over 3 million miles accident free driving including being an owner operator and can't get hired as a driver. He's in his 50's. Was told it's up to Bentonville. There is also a driver that was hired in his mid 20's. Less than 5 years experience but his dad volunteers for different things that makes Walmart look good in the local paper. Both get along with the managers real good.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, he talked to corporate and they said 1 year from the driving test is the soonest he can apply at any terminal in the US.

If I could pass a D.O.T. physical, I would like very much to have been able to go to a truck driving school to learn how to drive a truck.
I would like to have been able to drive OTR to all 48 states and Canada.

I am working very hard to be able to pass a D.O.T. physical at a later time.

I am 60, will be 61 this year. I would be more than willing to drive nights, even at my age. Night time driving is much less traffic and generally much more peaceful.

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

Dang. Good luck to him next time. My advice is looking up pretrip videos on YouTube. The school that crst uses has an amazing knowledge and refreshment. As far as the driving just tell him to take his time and to ask a question before doing anything he's not 100% about even if its the smallest. I got a perfect score doing just that.
