So I've been smelling brakes the last couple days when I park and hop out, or come to a stop at a set of lights window down. Had a mechanic yank a tire and drum. The drum is really close to being out of spec, and he was having trouble adjusting it up properly. So I said just put a new drum on I'll have the whole truck gone over next week when I take time off. Parts guy gives him a drum that doesn't match up. They argued back n forth for an hour and couldn't match up parts.

So the question is- I need at least one drum and shoes on the LH steer. It can't be that much more money for S cams and bushings. Do I convert the steer axle back to factory International (meritor) parts and be done with it?

Also I've changed two rear axle diaphragms and one steer axle brake chamber, should I do the other three that are left just for piece of mind?

I'm not trying to cheap out I'm trying to spend money cost effectively. I would rather it gets done on my time and my dime rather than cause issues on the road.

    SAR Thanks this.

Wonder why the switch out to begin with.
On steer axle, me I would want matching parts on both sides.

Whichever way I go it's definitely gonna match side to side, they only had the LH apart. Like I say it's gotta get done just need to pick a path.

Previous owner said it wasn't him, at least not on purpose. Coulda been the shop he used.

Brake chambers are like headlights....one goes, the others aren't far behind if you know they're the same age. And if you don't know their age, you do now.

What was different between new and old drum? Sounds like some one put different hubs on it or had a spindle replaced with another flavor. Check to see if L & R are the same before buying parts.

I don't know the difference sorry. I think the size was different. They didn't want me in the shop. The tech said the shoes and s cams looked different than normal too. I think the parts guy said a 4204 shoe was pretty standard but that's not what I have.

Good point on checking the other side first, thanks.

They would let me in, show me what they found, then kick me out again. The mechanic said he has no issue with me in the shop it's the higher ups. He got in crap for just that last weekend so outta respect I followed the rules.

Some trucks come with centrifuse drums, They are interchangeable with cast drums if you have the correct one. Get with your local trusted dealer and or parts guy and see if that is a proper drum.
If you have brake diaphragms failing it would be wise to replace them all. Many rear chambers are double units. Replacing one leaves one more to fail. Also the springs and through shaft seal are old. Swap the chambers out.

    He called them gunnite drums

The rears and steers look like single chambers. The front drive axle are different.
I'll look at new chambers thanks

Your welcome. I thank Gunnite is a quality name brand. Centrifuse is a type not a brand. Parts welded together and a coil of steel cast into the drum type thing. They are visually different than cast drums and more expensive.
