Volvo '08 VNL 780 Hard Steering

Return power steering line may need to be replaced if it has not been changed yet

 

Some vehicles have a filter in the steering fluid reservoir,

 

Flush the fluid & bleed the system.

Old fluid may lose it's hydraulic "power" and also air may reduce the effectiveness of the energy/effort transfer.

 

The steering pump could be worn out, leaking I posted link below 3 years ago, i have same truck 2008/780 . The power steering and fuel pump are spinning on same shaft,don't make my mistake replacing one pump only; get a combo because the shaft usually goes out of balance damaging both pumps.

usually just change the filter in the power steering reservoir. thats most of the time the actual problem not the pump.

 

@nasriza ....quick question...does the D12 (1998) have a filter in the p/steering system. If so, where is it?

Stop throwing parts at it and have it properly diagnosed. Start by supporting the front end on stands and separate the drag link from the pitman arm. Insure that the wheels will turn from lock to lock(full left to full right) by hand with little effort if any. If they are stuck you likely have a frozen king pin or front end component that the power steering system cannot overcome. Follow up by have the steering system pressure and flow tested to determine where the hydraulic system is lacking. I've seen everything from plastic plugs stuck inside reservoirs to hoses collapsed internally causing restrictions in the fluid flow. These restrictions can be on either side of the pump or the gear.
