How selective is Landstar? And other Landstar questions...

Hey guys. I am an owner operator with Werner currently, and I just paid off my truck a couple of weeks ago ( took me only five months to pay it off, go me!). Now I'm thinking of going to Landstar because frankly I'm bored of forced dispatch.

Some drivers told me that Landstar only hires 5% of applicants. Is that true? And if so, what are some hidden disqualifying reasons? Because I qualify with everything that's posted on their website - I have clean record except for one speeding ticket, paid off 2014 Cascadia, 3 years experience, HazMat endorsement, no shady criminal stuff in my background history, all that noise. If there are other hidden preferences, is there anything I can do before applying to improve my chances?

And another Landstar question I'm going to throw in there: right now with no truck payments I'm making about $2000 - $2300 a week after fuel and expenses. Can I hope to make at least that much with Landstar? I run hard, stay out for two months at a time at least, I have passport for going to Canada, I don't mind Northeast and I actually like California, so I'm pretty much not limited by anything geographically when it's comes to chasing the good runs. I don't mind if I make the same money as I do now but with that extra fun of choosing trips, but I might be hesitant about a drop in income...

Well, since I posted this I actually did get on with Landstar, so I guess they can't be extremely selective, lol.

You have a good point about running smart. Even in the week and a half I've been with them, I've had situations where I was really tempted to take a cheap load and keep moving rather than waiting for that $2.75 a mile load tomorrow. Sitting just seems wrong after forced dispatch and set mileage pay. But I wait and get the good load.

Gonna have to find a new hobby for all that sitting though, maybe I'll start learning programming or 3d design on my laptop...

 

Oh don't worry, I've been totally nerding out on the load board. But there is only so much time you can spend looking at loads you wish you could get but can't because it's a three day weeked and all the brokers are gone.

 

Other guy was saying 25%, now you're saying 5%... seems like something Landstar guys just say to discourage people from signing up and competing with them.

So... now that I am a Landstar guy, am I supposed to also start saying that?

PS: 5% of 5% is .25%. That means that if there are ten thousand current Landstar BCOs, then there are 4 million drivers out that either got rejected or failed. There are only like 2 million commercial drivers of any kind in this country.
So, umm... no. Just no.
