If minimum wage goes up to 15 bucks an hour?

McDonald's average pay rate for a crew member is $8.41 per hour. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and has not changed since 2009.

There are 50 states, and each one can set their own minimum wage rate.

Target is raising their pay rate to $15 per hour.

Why do companies pay more than the minimum wage? Simple....supply and demand for labor.

So right now today, you could work at Target for $15 per hour......but I don't see any drivers moving to Target, do you?

I don't care what New York does with their minimum wage, as I don't live there and I don't go there. It is expensive to live there and to go there, so I don't.

 

Well nursing is an easy job compared to trucking, as a nurse your chances of being killed or being hurt are no where near that of a truck driver, just getting out of a truck can be dangerous.

However truck driving isn't considered a skilled trades job and should be. This is where the problem lies with wages within part of the industry. This is a $20 a hour starting wage job no matter what others think, not 12, not 15 but 20.

On the other hand unskilled labor getting $15 a hour would negatively impact the economy as a whole, unemployment would go up for a time, inflation will increase into double digits and the economy as fragile as it is may tank - so it is a stupid idea. On top of that, it is even more of an idiotic idea to even have a minimal wage, it was there to keep certain groups oppressed while controlling others, you can put that together yourself, it is too obvious. All of this when it was created in the 30's drove more people out of work than it helped for the exact reason I stated unemployment will increase.

 

But even among fast food workers there is an elite core group who are good enough at their job that they deserve more. They tend to be minorities/felons/etc someone with something that restricts them from the job market somehow. Obviously there are a few competent people at the bottom of the social order and these are them. They tend to dig their way out... eventually. They work really hard for peanuts and make those restaurants run. The world would be a better place if all the other ####ty fast food workers went away and it was just those long term professional fast food workers who got the entire payroll bill paid to them. The people actually doing the work would be getting paid for it instead of being lumped in with some complete idiot who is working the drive through because they can't make hamburgers anywhere near fast enough.

 

Inflation wouldn't go up to double digits. All the minimum wage employees in the country don't make up enough additional cost to move the inflation rate 2% much less 7%+. Yes some cheap stuff (fast food, some clothing stores) will go up by double digits... But that's only until they can automate their operation more and get rid of the people who 15 bucks an hour is inappropriate for.

 

Exactly! Why a national minumum wage? Does the minimum wage in NYC need to be the same as Regalwood NC (on stop light town run by a bootlegger, i picked up a bond skip there once)

 

Minimum wage has literally never mattered for any job in Louisville in my lifetime. Everyone, including fast food, has always paid better than min wage. If the minimum wage is less than the lowest paying job within a hundred miles we don't have a minimum wage effectively and it isn't distorting the labor market at all. Basically at this point we have a vestigial minimum wage that inflation long ago made irrelevant. Going to 15 bucks an hour would mean we'd have a real minimum wage again... IE one that sets a real floor on what employers can pay that is relevant to what some of them would have paid. I think this would be bad for the very worst workers... But honestly they are garbage people and I don't care about them at all. If I could I'd take their welfare and let them starve. Helping them along is super stupid. If I had my way we'd offer 15k from the government for people who haven't had kids to get sterilized. Why? Because it would reduce the # of poor children born every year significantly. I think the nation needs more people not fewer, but they need to stop coming from the poorest.

 

Can't happen too soon. Human beings weren't needed for those jobs in the first place. Think of how much irreplaceable human time is being saved with those touch screens both for the customers and the minimum wage people who now have to go do something else... And that literally cannot be a bad thing. I'd rather pay them for doing nothing than pay them for doing almost nothing and making normal people compete with them on price when they are getting a subsidy.
