I think that most successful-at-life hardcore liberal types are super confused about why people with our kind of background would be conservative and anti welfare. It's because we've actually met the people on welfare and know how full of #### they are about why their lives are screwed up. We come from the same places and we've found a way to earn a living and provide for our families. They should do the same or nature should take it's course and they should lose everything including their kids.

Why should I, who grew up poor but still have never received a dollar in welfare besides some Pell Grants, have to pay for lazy ######## who I KNOW not only suck but are actively reproducing more people who suck?

On the flip side though the total money going to poor people isn't remotely close to the giveaway we're giving to the baby boomers. You jerks are getting healthcare that you didn't even pay for 33% of at my expense. The-Worst-Generation-Ever. Never made a difficult political decision. Managed to take the worst parts of both conservatism and liberalism and combine them for the time period you were in power. You can't die soon enough so the rest of us can pay for the hole you dug for us. Sorry not sorry.

Absolutely incredible that the generation forged by Vietnam managed to do the EXACT SAME THING and waste over a trillion dollars on the 'war on terror' and who knows how much on 'the war on drugs'. As if abusing returning veterans wasn't shameful enough, the baby boomers managed to go through all of that without learning a single solitary thing. While giving us the least productive government in American history. Just a really great job. An entire generation of welfare queens collectively more focused on what they could extract than what they could produce. I know some of you are definitely not responsible, but the group results are not flattering. I know those who are exceptions are probably as pissed about it as I am.

EDIT: Bottom line the government needs to spend a hell of a lot less money. Less money on the military, less money on old people, less money on poor people... I'm all for helping people help themselves, but we're actively punishing people for improving their situation through welfare policies that effectively create a 100%+ effective tax rate on additional earnings past the low 20k's in most states. That kind of nonsense keeps people poor. If we absolutely have to pay for old people who didn't plan and poor people who can't seem to hold a job we should just do UBI and be done with it. Anything that lowers the amount of decisions the government has to make. Any time you let them make a decision they add 2 weeks and 80 man hours of 'labor' to process the lengthy paperwork. More stuff needs to be automatic in government with no human interaction at all. They have the same number of employees they had in the 80's... Before the personal computer was effectively invented.

The average tenure on welfare is less than two years.

Yeah I knew a lot of college kids who got food stamps for a year or two. Of the people who are on longer term the fact that welfare phases out as you earn more money can often create situations where getting a better/harder job causes them to lose money vs some crummy min wage job.

I hate to say it but my own mother is kind of like this. She supported hillary despite the lies, cheating the American people, all of the general bad behavior that is the Clintons. I don't necessarily support our current president, but never in a million years could I allow that woman to be our president, which is precisely why she lost against trump. People are tired of the Clintons.

My mother said that all politicians lie, well that might be true to an extent but how much do you let them get away with. The American people held her accountable for bad behavior. That simple.

I am ashamed that my mother thought that woman was acceptable. Not in a million years. I assume vote for Ronald McDonald

Well if you counted all of the times my sis-in-law was on it, she's probably collected more then a decade. She actually got foster kids for a while to "Pay the electric bill". Absolute 100% total scumbag.

Allot of people are poor because they choose not even try. Poor by choice or by unfortunate circumstances is not the same thing. Poor by choice is refusal to become an active, productive member of society. I like my job overall but it still has it's stressful moments. It's called taking care of my family and myself.

Eh. The current guy is pretty awful. I hate both options this time, but I suspect she was slightly less awful than he is. I REALLY don't like Hillary, and in fact hate her even more since she lost to Trump, but Trump... just wow.

He's the bosses kid who takes over after the boss dies... and then burns the place down slowly over the next 20-30 years with it taking that long because daddy was VERY successful. At this point I don't even believe he's a billionare. He's just so stupid it hurts. More and more it looks like he wouldn't release his tax returns because they would prove he's a fraud. The man was forced in court long before he was elected to pretty much admit that he was only worth 800M. He's screwed thousands of people just like us when his companies went bankrupt or just refused to pay. And absolutely no one knows how much he owes whom, which means his net worth could actually be much lower or negative. He's a rich guy- but you don't get credit for that when your dad left you a couple of billion dollars. It takes real work to reduce much less destroy a fortune like that.

And Hillary lost to that guy lol. Like how incompetent can you be? Why couldn't the GOP just put up someone I didn't hate? Why couldn't the Democrats run her running mate instead? He seems like a decent enough guy (I know nothing about him but that he seems very middle of the road and has been in the game a long time)... I'll take competence over ideology any time. The Democrats and the Republicans are so deeply incompetent that I can't back either side. I just hope to god there's a moderate practical party for me to vote for in my lifetime. One that recognizes that the right answer is somewhere between true laizez faire capitalism and communism. I'm mostly tired of the whole 'how much government is enough' argument. Can we just do stuff that works please?

Hardly anybody wants to be poor.

The big problem is how many people are trained and conditioned to hate on and blame poor people for the ills of the nation when the biggest chunk of government spending is for the military, and the vast majority of welfare goes to giant corporations. Public aid for poor people is a tiny drop in the bucket in comparison.
