I'm thinking of hauling cars part time.I planned to do short runs no more than 500 miles .I only am planning on hauling one car at a time. Will i need to have a MC # ? Besides cargo insurance what else do i need to have?

MC#s are no longer needed. But you will need to be a motor carrier and have a usdot number, unless you do not cross state line. Then you will need to have your state's operating authority.

Before you do anything have you done the math on how you're going to make a profit hauling one car?

To the op, most dealers have retired people who are willing to ride along & retrieve that one off car that a dealer may be trading. Far & few between to be able to find something that will break even on a single car basis. Another example is there is a local (to me) group of dealers who pay retired people to ride down in a group mini van & pick up cars from auction. Last I knew, they paid $25-$35 to go to St Louis(100 miles each way) & $50 plus lunch to retrieve a car from Chicago(180 miles each way). Obviously those drivers are doing it more to be social & for something to do.

More likely to win lottery, particularly to find another vehicle leaving the same area at such a rate.

So do it, no one is stopping you. Let me know how it all works out in 6-8 months. All you are looking for here is approval.

One unit at a time just don't cut it. You'll spend more than you earn. And if you think you're gonna move high end stuff and show cars...well, you'll see. I say go do it.

So not only do you think you will make a living (or even a profit) hauling just one car, you think you will be able to make it part time? Please tell me you're joking.
