700k miles and lose a cam. That is simply not acceptable. Camshafts should go 2 million miles easy. Heck assuming a guy changes cam bearings when he rebuilds the engine, the cam should never go bad.

That's what I thought too. He told me that's it's not uncommon in any motor with EGR. All these guys do is Cummins engine jobs and they see a lot of motors. He also said that he rarely sees one of the newer motors make it to a million before it needs either a job like mine or an entire rebuild. Too much trash in the oil from the EGR eats the motor up. On my new truck, I have an oil bypass system in my mail box right now and I'll be starting off on the right foot with that one. He confirmed my opinion that running one of the newer motors and to expect a million miles out of it you need a bypass system to keep the oil clean. His favorite motor is the N14. He says ever since they dropped the N14 it hasn't been the same.

Who would have thought that dumping soot into the oil would cause premature engine failures...?

Yeah with extended oil change intervals. Aren't they recommending up to 50,000 miles with some of these engines? That's like lapping compound for motor oil.

With synthetic blend Detroit says you can go 50,000 on an oil change. No way I could do that, unless I was trading every 200,000-300,000.

How many miles were on your last truck that you traded? You could probably get away with this but I feel sorry for who buys that truck next. An oil change once a year is about $150 + your time. That's some cheap maintenance.

Had 234,000 on it when I traded it. I just can’t do it, if circumstances change, and I decide to keep a truck for a long time I don’t want that worry in the back of my mind.

Doesn’t the new Cummins x15 have oil change intervals of 80k.
