i have a few questions and if you'll go with me for a second:

For the purposes of this question, Let's forget about California for a second. In fact, let's assume we don't live in California and have no intention of operating in there.

    1) Let's say i buy a new 2017/18 Liner Coronado complete with Detroit DD13. Is it legal to put, say a CAT 3406 in there?

    2) Or, to ask the question another way, how will anyone know if i put a cat 3406 in a new(er) truck?

    3) When, if any, is the cut-off date to when i can put any engine in any truck?
    a) Let's say i have a 1993 pete 378?
    b) An 1983 pete?
    c) a 73 pete?
    And so on?

A glider is a new truck sold with no engine, you tell the factory what engine you are going to run and they set it up for that engine.

When you take delivery of the truck you take it home and install your engine, I am not aware of any time limits or engine restrictions for gliders.

They were created so a wrecked truck could be rebuilt, they also come without a transmission or rear-ends and suspension unless you specify that you want those items included.

By the way, even in California they don't care what year the truck is or what engine came in it (if any); all of the regulations are specific to the year of the engine.

You can run any truck you want but the engine must be manufactured in 2010 or later and have all of the emissions from its year of manufacture in place and functional.

You can run once a year in California with older engines. Apply online at the CARB web site IIRC. You must apply at least three days prior to entry. The permit is good for three days, midnight to midnight, and up to 1000 miles.

2021 is the death knell for trucking as I knew it.

I cannot accept a death of a entire industry. Based on the outlawed engines...

  11. very old info on your post.

    https://www.usnews.com/news/best-st...-gas-vehicle-tax-hike-advances-in-legislature

To win support from truckers, who would face significantly higher fuel costs, Brown and top lawmakers agreed to prohibit the state from requiring them to retire or retrofit trucks before they're 13 years old or reach 800,000 miles. Some truck owners would be able to keep trucks for up to 18 years.

The provision will ensure truck owners have time to recoup their investment in more efficient technology without worrying that they'll face a new, stricter mandate a few years later, California Trucking Association officials said in a letter to lawmakers.
