The crane company I worked for did a lot of OS/OD but never anything that big. We did a bunch of work on some really sketchy roads. A fun job for sure and at the end if the day you knew you did work!

Cents per mile mean nothing while burning up hours in a traffic jam.
Most reputable outfits pay at least $100.00 extra for going into the city.

I agree. A lot of drivers know how to make good money driving the northeast, I was not one of them. I. AlwAys got frustrated, and told my fm to get me out and send me anywhere, I didn't care.

When in Rome, join the Teamsters. Until then, stay out west. I'm counting the days until I can leave this hell hole.

You will be successful. Please don't give up on yourself. 50 is still relatively young and you have MANY great years left. Your age is an indicator of the fact that you have a solid level of experience.

I laughed pretty hard at 'I heard commodity hauling paid much better than oversize'. I've never heard that ever, and for very good reason. The exact opposite is true. O/D guys are basically the best paid truckers out there. There may be some people who haul weird hazmat that do better, but I don't know anything at all about that.

It's also much riskier and much harder. There's a huge difference between having a claim ruin 10k of produce and ramming something large, solid, and expensive into the bottom of a bridge. That second claim can easily be for more than a million dollars.

It's kind of hard to beat $96,000 to run an oversize load during daylight hours from Galveston Texas to Bridgeport West Virginia plus $1,000 per day detention while the customer figures out how to get the heavy load up the side of the mountain.

Steel Dragon and Dan.S Thank this.

I've always felt O/D has more in common with construction/project management work than it does with regular trucking. It's just SUCH a different beast.
