Hello everyone, i have a 2016 Volvo truck that I recently found out I cannot plug in any of the ELD devices into.
The data port on my truck is rectangular and when I called the dealer they said that all the new Volvo trucks are like that.
When I called several ELD manufacturers, I asked them if I could use an adapter. They all had pretty much the same response that they couldn't guarantee compliance because it was not designed to work with OBD2.
With the deadline closing, what do I do about this debacle?
I've been working very hard on getting rid of the truck and going to a Glider with pre-2000 motor, not dealing with anymore of this government nonsense. Problem is most all of the glider trucks are picked clean and the remaining ones aren't even close to what I'm looking for.
This ELD mandate is such a distaster like Obamacare ..!!
Cannot comply with ELD mandate in New model Volvo trucks. Incorrect data port .. obd2 not round !!!

All of the truck manufactures are switching to OBDII over the next few years. It will be the new standard for the industry.
Fortunately, while it is an OBDII type connector, it uses the Heavy Duty protocall, not the automotive one.
Here's an adapter and pin out that can be purchased.

I think I saw a place on the internets that sells a special tool which allows you to reshape the round end connector into a rectangular shape. Look it up on google, I'm sure it's there.KB3MMX, Bakerman, Studebaker Hawk and 1 other person Thank this. -

I wouldn't want an eld to plug into the port. On my truck anything I leave in it winds up falling out after a few days due to road shock. The trucks all have extra spots that you can hard wire into the J1939 data bus.

In talking to the ELD folks at Rand,, Volvo is correct. They cannot guarantee that port. If you use the adapter they cannot guarantee. Some of what was told to me is not public knowledge yet. Not trying to sell you a ELD, but you can talk to the Reps from Rand to get more info.
