Yeah it was very much an LTL. I mean it needed to be there in a reasonable amount of time, but nothing crazy. The only reason I didn't push it LTL is that I wanted real cargo insurance.

What do you mean by this? My cargo insurance doesn't differentiate between truck load and ltl.

The big LTL carriers are self insured and expect you to live with their own in house claims policy. They make you buy overpriced extra insurance if you want better than that... And TBH I don't really trust their overpriced extra insurance to do it's job. No particular reason for feeling that way I just don't trust it.

Your regular ### common carrier cargo insurance is fantastic by comparison.

Yeah Old Dominion was quoting like 450 bucks on that particular shipment. But the freight was supposedly fragile (turned out not to be) and worth like 50k so I didn't want to let the boys at OD rough it up. They're one of my preferred LTL carriers... But I didn't want anyone to touch it until it got to the receiver honestly.

EDIT: And being able to think that all through on the fly is why I'm worth a lot of money. I have a lot of different stuff I can actually make happen in the real world. Normal people cannot magically summon a semi truck to any point in the CONUS within 2-3 hours ready to go anywhere. I can. That gets a lot of people out of a lot of jams. I can also figure out how to get something moved cheap, something moved fast, or some mixture of the two. I know exactly which option is the most expedient (in terms of my time) way to get those things done and approximately what I should charge for them.

I can also usually tell when people are lying to me. Even though one got me pretty good yesterday afternoon/this morning. If I seem a little cranky today that's why.

Ok that got a lot braggy. Sorry.

When I really need that level of service I'm happy to pay for it. Of course it's literally my job to figure out how to need less service lol.

EDIT: Ultimately the requirements of the freight determine who gets to work on it. A lot of loads only have room for one professional unless some happy coincidence brings us together.
