Help radiator flush

Oh....that's not good.

 

Oh no... That is not good. Looks like someone mixed coolants. The water jacket in your motor may possibly look as bad. I don't think a flush is going to fix this mess. I would say a new radiator and pull the motor apart. Have you removed the thermostat yet? I would do that and see how that looks. If there is a coolant filter on there, I am not that well versed on Cat's, but there should be one on there too... If there is, pull that too and see what it looks like, normally located close to the water pump, looks like a car oil filter if it is there.

 

Looks like old geled up coolant. Really old.

Either it hasnt been flushed in a long time or the truck sat for a really long time.

I've bought old cars like this. I usually tore the motor down and flushed it out in a parts cleaner with solvent.

Guessing that is not really an option or something you want to hear. But there is no telling how many passages are clogged, how bad the clogs are, what condition the thermostat is in. Maybe run some high pressure water through it and see how much gunk comes out.

Thats not something I would want to see in a truck.

That did not just happen, that took some time to do. I would break out the wrenches and start tearing things apart. You are not going to just flush that gunk out. Like Hurst said, it is more than likely in the cooling passages and God only knows where else.

Start with the coolant flush cleaner, and rinse, repeat a few times, before going crazy...

• best case: flush & be done
• worse case: replace radiator/water pump impeller/ hoses
• worst case: open up block (not likely)
