Cummins isx common problem???

All engines leak oil. Unless it is making a big mess, I just recommend washing it from time to time. If you have pictures, we could look and try to pinpoint.

 

The main oil gallery or rifle is cut through the front of the block to go from one side of the engine to the other. So if that is leaking you are looking at front cover to the block reseal. That is a big job and requires the gear train to be taken apart. This is not a job for a diy'er or backyard guy. The other common leak is the cam shaft thrust plates that can leak down and in behind the front cover, which also requires the cam gears to come off. Also a big job, this is why I say to wash it and live with it unless it is a big leak.

 

It isn't uncommon, but something you would see more of on older engines.

 

Hey heavy I got a ? About my 13 isx while your here .
Its got 561k on in it and recently it started using oil which got progessivly worse until it was guzzling a gallon at a 1000 miles .
All the while ran perfect with no smoke and great mpg .
So it was determined the crankcase filter was plugged and switched out to the lifetime version and
oil consumption dropped off to 2000 miles on a gallon .
I still wasn't happy with that so I thought maybe I've got some carbon packing going on ? And ill try some howes meaner power cleaner and see what happens ?
So I treated every load of fuel with it for about 4000 miles and worked the snot out it on the hills and mountains .
Watching the exhaust closely in these hard pulls I saw it belch out some grayish looking smoke a few times that didn't smell like a regen.
Within the first 1200 miles it took my davco filter from nearly 3/4 full down to less than 1/2 full and for the last 3000 miles it hasn't used any oil at all .
What's your opinion on this turn around ?

 

Yes, for sure your oil consumption sounds like carbon packing on the rings. It also sounds like the fuel solution is doing it's job. I would account the smoke and weird smell to the extra additives in the fuel burning off. I have seen Davco's fluctuate a bit in their level, but I would just replace the filter to be safe. Make sure you replace the top cap oring and base cap oring with the new ones that come in the filter kits, some guys skip those steps sometimes.
