thanks for your response zvar...I have been using my cdl a and med card over the last few years driving for a passenger trans co which involved airports with suvs or corporate shuttle buses up to 40 passenger so everything is still current I just haven't driven a t/t in quite a while...divorce after 27 years is putting me in a bit of a tough spot so I pretty much need to drive as much as I possibly can and try and save as much without paying rent anywhere...19 year old daughter in college too...just nervous about things and don't want to make a bad situation worse....57 yrs old

Wat? You don't know how to do a PTI? That refresher should remind you how to get it done quickly enough. You never really forget.

Don't be nervous, if you are the trucker you used to be it will all come back to you straight away. I once was away from big rigs about a decade and in 2006 I scored a short hour job shuttling loaded trailers from a production building down the road to a shipping building, about 25 of them. All 53 foot with a modern ford 9000 which was a pleasure to drive in that situation. Popped my first trailer into the dock in one move to within a inch and walked on cloud 9 the rest of the evening. When you have what it takes to get it done, it don't take much at all to unforget.

You don't have to do a refresher, certainly not one you have to pay for out of pocket. I had not driven a tractor trailer in 20 years, not since CDL school and Abilene, Swift, KLLM and Dart offered me jobs. Knight and Prime were also potential employers and none of them required or even suggested an external refresher course prior to starting with them.

I went with Abilene as their training program wasn't a fixed length and I got training pay from my first day there in orientation. I got my own truck in just shy of a month and the earnings significantly increased. I had no rent or car note etc, no family I needed to see regularly so I stayed on the road months at a time and I put a minimum of $3k in my savings account every month doing that.

OTR trucking is a great way for anyone to get back on their feet.

FFE (Frozen Food Express) has refresher course and a job. Probably send you to refresher in Lancaster,TX.
Abilene Motor Express, already mentioned, is ok also.

thanks for the confidence booster, it's not that I don't know how to do it I was just wondering why or if it has to be done in a 3 day refresher course. I don't understand why it isn't done with a check off sheet instead of by memory. as long as the inspection takes place what's the difference?

There is a huge difference in doing a pti, and being able to pass a pti inspection test, In the test, it's all about the wording of each item.

As far as a checklist for the just walk step by step around the vehicle and let the truck be your checklist.

The way I touch a truck in a PTI is to examine everything by eye that is bolted, welded, tied, wired to, etc on that truck. There isnt anything there that is not necessary except maybe airride and chrome. I start at the front and work around the entire vehicle and everything I can see and touch gets checked.

The problem with that is most instructors when buried in 300 sentances involving 40 different objects inside just the engine bay has eyes that glaze over listening to me and tell me stop stop already enough, let's drive.

    Boom PTI test completed.

PTI is not a big deal unless you don't have a CDL and are trying to pass the PTI at the DMV.
The DMV won't even give a road test until you pass the PTI.
You already have a cdl, so that's not an issue.
