Putting a sign on the back of a truck does not make something legal, look under Federal regs, besides, I don't have to be shur, I just have the need to not be arrested.

Putting a quote on a forum saying something is illegal does not make it so. I have looked in the regs and have found nothing saying buttonhooks are not legal, and I am not saying they are but I havent seen anything saying they are against the law. If you know where its at in the federal regs please point it out and I will be a believer. I think any law covering that would come from the state. If you do any city driving at all, at some point in time you will probably have to use a buttonhook to get around a corner. Sure you can turn from the second or third lane but that is opening yourself up to problems from the rear and posibily the law. You can go ahead and turn from the right lane and make people back up, which they might or might not be able to do (or they could be just unwilling, like I would be) and then because of the circumstances you still might not be able to make it. So if that sort of turn does not work for you then dont use it, but the fact of the matter is, its a safe and practical way to make a turn.

The way it was explained to me, a truck can use the space necessary to make the turn safely.

not sure about U.S laws but the button hook was the way I was trained by a very reputable school in N.S. it's a case where the laws don't always work for trucks you gotta do what you gotta do.

It is possible that they are not expressed to be legal OR illegal. Funny story. I got a ticket in Angola, NY for riding a wheelie for about .5 of a mile on the I-90 at 12:30 am. I got a lawyer for it ASAP since it was looking like it could be serious. Well, as it turns out there was nothing in the NYSVC stating that wheelies on motorcycles were illegal. You could write it as reckless driving, but since many people can ride them at any speed for any amount of time or distance, they are not inherently reckless. They could write it as an unsafe start, but I did not "start" by doing a wheelie. Since I used the clutch and engine momentum to lift the front, I never broke the speed limit. Long story short, they seem illegal, but the ticket was dismissed. I still don't do such silly things anymore though since that lawyer isn't going to work pro bono for the same thing over and over.

After following a truck a couple weeks ago for ten miles or so on I-95 in the middle lane, I decided to pass on the right as my exit quickly approached. Observing other drivers has kept me out of wrecks for about 20 years now, so the red flags went up when I saw this guy through his right side mirror trying to hold his head up (falling asleep) but figured I'd slide on by, as he'd kept her straight for as long as I'd been behind him. He crossed into my lane with no blinker as my nose was even with his rear tractor tires, and at 70 MPH, I've never been so happy to see a nicely paved shoulder free of re-caps, lumber and ladders. I resisted the urge to complete the pass and give him the one finger salute, just in case he needed the shoulder also, and besides, I knew I was in the wrong for being there.

I'd be willing to guess he did it on purpose. How close were you following him in that middle lane? Maybe you set him off somehow by tailgating him, then trying to pass on the right at the last minute.

Ya know, C, that thought did cross my mind (that he may have done it on purpose), but don't believe I was following close enough to allow a crash or p?ss someone off. Unless that one had a bad attitude before hitting high gear? Sound about right?

We didn't even swap paint and I'll take half the blame, along with the reminder to always leave an out. I just hope he gets some sleep and/or an attitide adjustment.

    Ya'll be safe out there.
