Low-stress driving jobs?

The things the LTL drivers at ODFL would moan about were laughable after a few previous years OTR.

Compare LTL turnover rate to TL, I think it tells the story pretty well.

 

Do all these want Hazmat?

 

Most all require it.

 

Dry van drop and hook with a company where you call them, they don't call you. I picked up a load Saturday delivering Thursday. Do that with load of bananas you might as well just haul them to a dump. I often have a delivery window of 48 hours where I can be there nearly as soon as the window opens. I want the money so I'll be there as soon as I can driving my preferred time of day. The only time I talk to my dispatcher is if there's a delay at a shipper or a problem making an appointment. I run 3k miles/week and my 10 is generally 12-14 hours.

 

I do a local garbage route.......pull a 50' open top
trailer......from transfer station to the landfill.

Just show up every day and do my job.......the
company I work for is horrible but the job is pretty
decent. Pays better than most OTR jobs do......home
every night.......

 

I once pulled Walmart trailers, driving for a carrier that was contracted by Walmart. I observed them Walmart drivers for a few weeks. Nice clean uniforms, terminals - DCs close to their homes, good pay and benefits... Easy, regional job, drop and hooks mostly. The dirty work, waiting to get loaded or longer hauls, was designated for contracted carriers, but even that was easy in my standards at the time.
Well, the only stress is that they kick you out, if you're close to your retirement and pension.

 

Most stress is self induced I figured out early in my career .. now I let very little bother me and hardly feel stress ever.. you can't change that shipper receiver 4 wheeler etc so learn to deal with their faults and expect it

 

Driving greyhound passegers makes prison guards shudder "who would want THAT job?"

 

I'd say Estes and Old Dominion are hands down the highest paying and less stressed trucking jobs out there for starters.

 

Well, for whatever stress they might have to put up with, I believe the amount of money actually being earned would put a lot of that to rest. My tanker-shuttling job I've been doing isn't exactly high stress in and of itself. Glad I don't have to load trailers much anymore. But the fact that we're paid strictly for activity on our end makes the thought of being able to make the monthly bills a harrowing thing.
$700-$800 max/week while maxing your clock each night just get 4-5 turnarounds and couple of unloads done?
Not entirely sure of what stress the ODFL linehaul guys have to face apart from the usual ones faced by any, given TL long haul person would be. But as I said, the pay seems justifiable enough to roll with the punch.
