As of 1/1/18 no more Parallel on CDL test? Florida

    Heard from a tester as of the first the state of FL won't test for Parallel parking on the CDL-A test anymore.
    Which means you're basically guaranteed a Straight-line, Offset, and a Alley dock on the backing maneuver test.

    Anyone else hear of this?
    Don't know if it's true or not, but thought that was pretty cool. I'm taking my test on the 4th and I can Parallel on either side 4/5 times with 1 pull-up but thought that was neat. Always thought it was a little ridiculous to have to Parallel when even our instructors could count on one hand the times they needed to Parallel park a big-rig.

    I guess your instructors never parked on the street and had to back in-between a truck that was in front of him and a truck that was behind him.

    If that's the case, who needs to learn how to parallel park anymore.

    No they did, they said that was the only time they ever had to, lol.
    Both of them in 40+ years of trucking said they could count on both hands the times they had to Parallel park.

    I paralleled many times in trucking.

    Once I did that on a bet in a small Mass Seaport town. Took 7 meters to do it. (Quarters in each one, good for two hours to breakfast) and about 3 inches from the curb (They measured...) on all the tires.

    We learned it in school even though Maryland did not require it. After we mastered it, we started competing to see about no pullups then fastest time.

    Nice!
    It's definitely nice to know,I'm not knocking that by any means. And the schools will still teach it and test for it (like a final grade on your backing maneuvers) but the state won't test for it.. it's fun to do once you got it down!

    Once you get general backing skills learned, then parallel parking is not going to be a problem. I do it at least once a week.

    Very interesting Jim!
    I thought it was weird how one of my friends was tested on a Hazmat railway stop.. I don't intend to get my Hazmat endorsement any time soon, and we were never taught how to do one! Luckily though my friend that got tested watched a bunch of videos on road tests so he was over prepared coming in and aced it.

    So it turns out we may still get a parallel? Maybe we won't know until the 1st.. either way I'm ready to test in a few days. Interesting bit about the left turn, we were taught about that.. good things to know!

    Florida actually tests cdl candidates on backing skills? News to me, most of the ones I get can't hardly back a lawn mower into a 747 hanger.

    LOL, some of us can actually back. However in our class it's about 50/50, I can do a alley dock 9/10 times with 2 pull-ups and can get both parallel's with 1 pull up 4/5 times. The rest of the maneuvers are easy, that's about normal for half of our class the other half it's a shot in the dark.. but they can usually get it in the hole after a few attempts.

    This is all being done with a '15 Freightliner sleeper and a '53 dry van.
