    Whether or not the pay is "reasonable" is directly related to the education, experience, and skill of the worker. While $15/hour to sweep the floors and take out the trash is unreasonably high for a 16 year old know-nothing who's only life experience thus far has been sitting in his mother's basement playing video games, it is unreasonably low for a 30 year old certified welder/fabricator who is highly skilled and excellent at his craft.

    If you are only seeking to sweep the floors and empty the trash, why should you be paid the equivalent of someone who has actually learned how to do something useful? Not all jobs are equal, and when floor sweepers demand the same pay scale as a highly skilled worker, guess who's job gets eliminated? Far cheaper to pay the highly skilled worker to take 15 minutes at the end of his day to clean his work station than to keep that unskilled guy on the payroll.

    Stop your bashing of OTR drivers.
    You couldn't make the the cut out here so be
    happy with what you got.

    Any of us can do what you do, we're just not willing
    To take the pay cut to do it.

    I've seen OTR trucks run stuff over in a wide open parking lot, or take 45 minutes to straight-line back into a dock...and you expect me to believe any OTR driver can get in & out of a tight job site without getting stuck or tearing anything up? Yeah, good luck with that.

    @crocky yes the people drive the economy but businesses are started by entrepreneurs and with high taxes and burdensome regulations people prefer to sit back and wait for a change before they make their move. Fact

    I choose not to be away from home for peanuts. To say I didn't make the cut is rude and absurd. I left willingly pursued local work. Could you do my job? You don't know you have not done it. These farms aren't all a cake walk to get into. A couple i must back into from the street. The driveways are often times ice or mud. The loads are much heavier gross over 100k on an overweight permit is commonplace. 10 speeds? 10 speeds are a toy, automatics...... a joke. I have a milk plant that I deliver to occasionally in batavia.... oatka. It's far from easy. You must back in and there is not enough room to get straight backing. Don't forget this is a smooth bore tanker and it does NOT take prisoners for those who drive too fast..... These things are notorious for roll overs.

    Every trucking job has it's challenges, don't think what I do is a walk in the park.

    I'm in my truck as I type this. I'm at a farm to load milk. I know one thing, when I get back to the yard I'm parking the truck, getting in my car and having dinner with my wife and kids....After which I will take a shower in my bathroom and sleep in my own quiet, safe, peaceful bedroom.

    I won't take anything away from anyone driving Otr, if that's your wish I respect you. I just think it's a very lonely and s*ually frustrating life.

    54k is not a bad starting wage, in a year I will ask the boss for more money.

    I'm still using my class A and am still part of the industry. I made the "cut" as opposed to those when step out of OTR throw their hands up and give up. I found my niche.

    @rcelmo Rich people already did their work by busting ### studying and making good decisions and creating business while guys like decided to jump feet first into the job market out of Highschool. I don’t understand the wealth envy mentality. I’ve never gotten a job from a poor person

    Not to mention I worked in dairy plants before I became a dairy hauler. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why my boss wanted me. I'm not going to screw up the paperwork, samples, spill milk, wash tags, seals, ECT ECT. I have seen all of that before. This job requires a CDL but also requires a milk receiver license. A certification, I already had before I took this job.

    The point of this entire thread is a grossly inflated minimum wage might make people leave a serious profession if the money doesn't get better in other industries..... not just trucking but everywhere that requires a learned skill. Why become a trucker, welder, ECT if you can make almost as much money being a Wal-Mart greeter or fast food worker?

    The government is going to get a lesson in unintended consequences
