Yeah, they sent me on a run thru Joliet and the GPS, which we are not allowed to deviate from, put me on a bridge rated at 31 ton and I was at 40 T. Got caught up by a Sheriff 3 miles away and slapped with a 8k citation. The sheriff said it was Roehl’s ticket because he picks up 6-7 Roehl trucks a day going over that bridge and he was sick and tired of it. Roehl is saying that it is my ticket and the sheriff said it was Bull####. He thinks they’re sticking me with it because I only had three days left on my two week notice. Just figured I’d warn y’all about their games.

Long time off-and-on lurker on these boards. Finally decided to register when I saw this this thread. I too drove for Roehl years ago as my first trucking job. I wasn't on any home time plan. I pretty much just stayed out as long as I could take it (usually 3, sometimes 4 weeks) then called my dispatcher to request to be routed home. Even staying out like that I never exactly hit the marks they promised... and not for lack of trying. Never turned down a load, and was never late except in cases where it couldn't be helped like having to stay at a terminal while my truck was being fixed (and even then they just gave the load to someone else). The reason I was given was because I was a "New Driver™". I thought this was the biggest load of horse s*** I'd ever heard because I'd already proven time and time again that I could do the work. They did train me and I never heard of having to pay for their training if you quit... but, like I said, this was years ago and maybe they didn't do that back then.
Needless to say, I quit and went somewhere else... only to find that the tricks are pretty much standard all across the board with big OTR companies like them. They promise a lot, but understand recruiters say anything to put butts in seats and when their promises don't pay up, they somehow blame the driver. ALL OTR sucks, but don't let that discourage you because it gets better later. Your CDL can be used in many types of jobs, not just OTR. I now work as a local driver for a very small company. I'm on a fixed salary so I don't have to worry about mileage or load pay. Working sometimes more, sometimes less, but on average a regular 8-hour day, 5 days a week, and still making more than I did grinding for OTR companies. What I'm saying is if you aren't happy with Roehl, you won't be happy with any of them (I wasn't). Get the experience, then get the hell out of OTR. That's the only way to both make money AND have a normal life in the trucking industry.Itomyneato and SouthernNortherner Thank this. -
Good post. The key at Roehl as is most everywhere is a good fleet manager. I started with them and drove for them for 3 years and averaged about 2800 miles a week with home time. That being said, it's a starter company and nothing else just like other garbage OTR carriers. I now drive local LTL and make $500 more gross a week working less hours and home daily.Itomyneato, SouthernNortherner and Guba_Blarg Thank this.
