That stuff does happen. I once worked for a car rental co. We used the local dealer for warranty work and generally had 3 -4 cars at the dealer getting repairs. I noticed one of our cars at a residence over the weekend and found out the service writer was taking our cars home. That got his arse fired !

You may read that little paper you signed when you dropped it off that they can drive the vehicle. I had a shop outside of Indy do that with one of my trucks being serviced by their tech, he put 40 miles on the thing and lost the fuel cap on one of the tanks. I complained but the owner showed me where I signed his paper work so you live and learn.

It depends what you've had done to it, after some repairs it may be necessary to take it for a test drive however that should only be just around the block so only say 1 extra km on the dial.

I'd find something else to do than to pursue this. I'd just stop using that shop unless they do something to keep your business.

That little piece of paper implies consent to test drive the vehicle as part of the diagnostic or QC procedure, NOT to run personal errands or other unrelated use. They'd have a choice in compensating me for those miles, or I'd go to town filing complaints with the BBB, one-star reviews on yelp and every other "review" type web site, and perhaps even letters to the editor of every local newspaper...nothing untrue, just alerting folks to the fact that if this clown has your car at his shop, he'll cruise the town like he owns the blasted thing. Hell, if he gives me too much trouble, might even contact the local TV news to do an investigative report on his operation...in other words, I'll see to it that word gets out so that nobody who cares about their car will be bringing it to him to wrench on.

Well I guess if you have no plans on ever using this shop again, then that's an option. Let us know how that goes over....
