I'd gladly do 400 miles for $5 per mile doing short haul in a day. That's still $2,000 and could still pick up another load on my way back home.

That short haul 400 mile a day will take you all day to do it. Where will be your time to pick up a short one on the way home? So then you'd have to set on it all night and unload in the morning and will mess the next day up. See how easily you can get way behind.

This is where day rate makes a lot of sense.

My average length of haul is about 400 miles. Since where I live most Freight is regional by Nature, I have no problem maintaining an average daily rate of about $1,100.
The company driver mindset of more miles equals more money is not valid. More money is more money.

Try the work before you put money to a truck. If you find you don't like it, the note on the truck might have a penalty for selling early. Some are a year and a half. That's a long time to do something like this if you end up hating it. If you pay the penalty you take a bath and lose a lot of $$$
Stay in college, case young tail and get the degree. Open your own CPA business if you want to strike out on your own. This business is a lot different that what you think. VERY different.
I have a pilot's license and what you're asking is like me asking an airline, hey, I want to buy a 747 and run it across the ocean just because they must make a lot of money with all those paying passengers.
All you're seeing is the tip of the iceberg, with $$$ in your eyes.

Natural, Pup97 and Ruthless Thank this.
