Newer trucks can't handle extreme cold?

Initially, I was thinking the same thing as you...

Then I realized this: The frame rail itself, is ACTUALLY a barrier against the cold blast of wind from the FAN itself...

I was idling my truck (volvo) with the hood up, and got to feel the extra cold blast from the fan --- it was C.O.L.D.E.R than I could handle, and I lived in Canada for 10yrs...lol

So, yes, it's not such a bad idea... after all

 

Def freezes. Perfectly fine. There is a coolant loop heater in the def tank and all the lines are heated. Will not try to dose def until the temp in tank is warm enough. Def freezing is no issue........

 

Same goes for outside frame mounted fuel filters. All ok. Run winter diesel......... perfectly fine.

 

So far not problems with my 2017 Cascade and DD13. Truck had Optimized Idle with auto parked Regen when needed. Tonight going to just let engine idle all night to keep fuel and everything warm. It will idle none stop below 20F and it's down to 2F so far.

 

Their should be an auto regen option. Now sure if a software up date. I think it needs to turned on to work. My 2017 has it, after about 6 hour ilde time it will do a parked Regen.

 

Detroits purr in this weather. Helps to run #1 fuel

Our 2001 Century was down to around -50 in South Dakota for a couple of days in 2001. Factoring in the winds it was probably lower than that at times. We ran our engine flat out at idle. That is one reason I remember this cold with that particular tractor. 1500 RPM set on the cruise control for idle and only 65 in the cab and sleeper.

The FLD 120 was a better truck in the cold with one exception, the drivers door would warp a little bit letting in some cold. So you had to bundle up on that side. The cab and sleeper was plenty warm.

We had a older freightshaker cabover in one of the erie lake effect storms during a nor'easter one winter, that one was theoratical cold. I don't know how cold it got that night with the winds, but I had the trailer pointed into it and the engine at red line using a stick to the pedal in those days for the sleeping. And by morning I am looking at snow which made me sort of question my ability to move at all. I had a full set of Michelins on the tractor and those made the day getting into Cleveland. Once across the Ohio we left winter behind. That was not a nice trip. Probably that one was where I decided enough is enough of that and simply take a few days off any time there is big snow showing up.

The following winter I told dispatcher that I will stay on the gulf coast into spring from that fall as a experiment and we did good. The reason we had to stop after about 5 to 6 months was the tractor had accumulated too many gripes, things that require shop work.

 

No DEF available you say?



No problem. Diesel fuel only. Just swing out the chicken lights.

 

Keeping the def tank full isn't rocket science .lol
