I95 NY City

Oh, it's in good shape for what it is...all lanes open.

 

did you actually load out of Boston or was it the area? Anything west/north of the mass pike/i95 you are better off running 84, but if you have to do the GWB make sure you are over it by 6 am, 287 go around isn't to horrible. I used to do the 17-80 going to north jersey, 202/206 wasn't bad either running down to PA but it's a bit out of the way. But I would either cross I95 at zero dark thirty or run 84-87s, to 287, some guys will run 684 to 287 but that road sucks and you still have to deal with the tap.

Fwiw, From the NY line (at the 287 split) to the bridge, my longest wait time is just under 6 hours. .... have fun!

 

They repaved 684 last month. Except by the sawmill :/ but otherwise it's a lot smoother. Traffic ain't any better tho lol

 

If you're going to come down 95 and come through New York and stay on 95 that's all good clearance for a tractor trailer.

But I have to say if you're not accustomed to driving through New York you should try to do it very early in the morning.

Besides all the crazy traffic the drivers are lunatics. I never used to think about it when I went up there everyday but now that I haven't been up there for so many years, I would be very very very very careful driving through there.

X1 said something about being aggressive and you almost have to be. At the very least you have to be proactive.

I don't know how they don't have massive accidents every single day. The drivers literally speed the zip in and out of traffic they tailgate you they jump in front of you they slam their brakes on and they do it or whether they're passing you or whether they are near you they stay literally inches from your truck. It's kind of something you have to experience to believe it.

And there are plenty of times you need to be aggressive to change lanes or do whatever it is that you have to do.

287 is better than 95 as far as the crazy drivers, but even on 287 they're still crazy just not as crazy as the city if that makes sense.

Like I said, for the first trip it's best 2 go through there maybe two or three in the morning just to get a feel for it.

I know you are not going into the city or in to Brooklyn, but when you get off and head into the city the signs are definitely incorrect. You just have to know where you're going.

I have no idea if they ever changed any of those signs as of yet, probably not. I had a buddy that used to live there and I can't remember what he told me but there was a code for the signs.

You would think a colossal City like New York city that has so many trucks traveling through it every day would have accurate signs for height.

Guess again.

 

I do not recommend getting off anywhere from 95.

Hell Ive been going into Hunts Point all my life and I STILL CHECK THE ROUTES, STREET Names and exits etc with second and third options for problems if they popup.

One street has a Elevated, you will be doing a very BIG fast OFFSET at 30 when the first steel set of posts and beams stand in your way. No signs to speak of really. Or they are posted like 20-25 feet up where the vandals cannot get to them.

The last time I went into Hunts My spouse prayed for peace all the way in and out. Let me tell you this. There should absolutely be blocks of humanity to and from there. But that day? In the middle of the day? and the previous inbound prior to sunrise? I did not see anyone.

Must be something in that prayer, imatell you.

One form of aggressive I used to do was come across the Tappan Zee, work my way over to 95 prior to connecticut. There used to be a toll gate there (Gone for decades... this is going way back)

Prior to that gate there is a entry that is two lane ram to merge before a overpass that holds two lanes or three I forget. Anyway, the ramp speed is slow. Im coming around the ramp at 70 shes leaning on the steer and front left corner of trailer wanting to tip. The cars coming up on my left sees me swing on really fast and they get scared and move left.

I horse her into the newly vacated lane just prior to reaching that bridge. That's one problem solved, next up is slowing to 55 before that next curve came up. The cars scatter because they think I am a wild man.

I was. Just very carefully calculated to at least make the drivers in cars veer off with a touch of whoa, omfg etc. Just a touch. Nothing crazy. It's more of a problem when it's very high load in the reefer box. I prefer to haul salt which is like only 4 feet high and you can nail her down like traction and go 90 if you want.

 

I used to go to Hunts Point.

It reminded me of that Kurt Russell movie,
"Escape From New York", lol.
