hello every one. i am a new privet carrier own a stepdeck trailer.today i had a load from canadian broker.he told me to pick up container from the port deliver to customer and bring empty back to the port,we aggreed on the rate and everything, i ask him for scac code, he give me 2 scac codes he is not sure witch one is good. so i went to the port at the gate they ask me for scac code i give them one he told me are you sure is right,i told him i have another one, he told me listen to me you can use any scac code you want. but if it's not right you will not get paid even you pick up container and deliver it.he scared me and aske him if i can use my scac code instead. he told me it's ur problem u can use any one you want.
i cancel the load and went back home, i didn't want to take chance to drive 1200 miles for free.
    so my questions are
1, does every container has to have a scac code to get it released or what?
2, does the broker provide the port with scac code for that container to make sure no one get that container other than dispatched carrier.
3.let 's say broker give me wrong scac code, and did make delivery and return empty container back to the port, why i should not get paid .if it's broker mistake not mine
4, what i should do to use my scac code in the future, since i already had one . are there any fees or charges if i use my company scac code
    5. do i need to let my insurance know that i have scac code
6,do i need to have scac code even iam not using theire chassis. i will be hauling just container on my stepdeck trailer
    thx for help

Hey, the guy at the check in pedestal scared you off unnecessarily. Giving the wrong scac code would mean that you wouldn’t get the container at all. Sometimes the same company can have different scac codes in every port. That’s why most likely your broker was not sure. If they checked you in with the scac given and you got the location from wich to pick the box, you were good to go. If anything didn’t check out, you wouldn’t get the box - trust me. Once you check in they print you a ticket, just double check the box number and company name on it.

SCAC code is just a code under which they save the name of the company that booked the container. It’s like you were picking up a regular load ans they asked you: „who’s your broker?”...

Every port I ever picked up at you just needed a SCAC, the can # (sometimes that included the check digit but usually that was only at railyards) and the pickup #. Heck, any port under NYPA we had transponders and you didn't even need to give the SCAC or truck info, it already read that before you even got to the check-in kiosk.

Doubt it would be all that different for a brokered load.

what i have heard that the scac code who pull container he is the one who's gone get paid. for example if u made a mistake when you give them the scac code , and you pull container out and deliver it you will not get paid, let 's say i use ur scac code by mistake, your company will get paid even you know nothing about the container. scac code is for carriers companies they got to be registered with the port so they can know who pull container out the port

why didn't you just call your broker and ask them to clarify what scac code you should be using.

You have to understanand that box is booked under a company name (which has a scac code), and they won’t let you take it, if the conpanies don’t match. If you give the wrong one, they will tell you, that you have no appointment and send you to trouble window...
And ports are not paying you...
They actually charge for handling and storage...
You haul for your broker, you give the number they provided you with. What’s so hard to understand?

How you gonna know SCAC code and Container number to pull it from the port? Got it from the broker maybe?
Or you just go to the port and pick up random containers guessing the numbers? In the second scenario your worries may be justified.
