No, one should not rely on SS but it's a mandatory deduction with a "promise" to be returned so by god I intend on holding them to it. You can't leave it to children so I plan on taking back as much as possible, one way or another.

To earn $75k and only "get credit" for $50k sucks

Fully agree. The way I see it, I’m paying for it so I might as well use it.

I wouldnt do it. I had a couple of past companies with that per diem crap, and basically my money was no better, and left me with a very small tax deduction or none.

Well, no longer having the ability to use the standard daily meal allowance changes the equation considerably. But I'm going to consult with a cpa in a few weeks to figure short term and long term options, either way.

I was itemizing close to $17k just in meal deductions. That's more than the increase in the new standard deduction.

My first full quarter with an automatic and 40,000 miles. I got NONE of the modified fuel bonus for the auto's and consequently missed out on top drivers bonus spilt. Anybody getting the full fuel bonus with the auto's?

I was afraid this would be an issue with the different bonus targets for the autos ... company reduces fuel cost AND bonus expenses. Win-win for company, lose-lose for the driver.

Turns out the 18's have a higher MPG threshold than the 16 and 17 auto, that starts at 8 mpg. I did not know this and have not actually seen the scale. I knew I was easily getting in excess of 7.8 and didn't keep track of it much. Ruth said only 3 drivers broke 8. You'd probably have to not run a lot of miles, get real lucky with your load assignments (many lighter loads) and get lucky with having more beneficial winds then problem winds to break 8. She's also trying to claim winter blend fuel is making it difficult to break 8 which is probably true. I was at 7.9 but did the typical mix of heavy and lighter loads and probably more negative wind days than positive wind days, and also, not a lot of Montana I-94/I-90 for me this past quarter.

I say they need to have separate mpg targets (about .2 mpg lower) for Q4 and Q1 as I think they may have been a bit over-optimistic on the target mpg for the 18's

Good luck getting anybody worth hiring to work for you, then. The fact that you think it has anything to do with safety when companies require a new physical from their doctor (even if the driver has their own new physical) speaks volumes about you. I have a beach house on the moon I'd like to sell you.

Per Diem is only good for the company. They don't have to pay all the payroll taxes now, only a portion. The rest falls onto the driver.
I got screwed 10 years ago, and just last year, paid off the tax bill i had from the irs, because former employer screwed up.

Plus the banks i bank with, do not accept per diem pay earnings, when deciding to loan you money. They only accept whats on the w-2's . They also don't take a letter from the employer, that explains per diem pay.
