What's sad is that a major repair like this will actually require about two times that amount in revenue to recover the cost of repair.

Timewise...If they got to it, that can be done in one afternoon.

Yeah, If that truck is being driven by someone else, you have to take into consideration the labor, overhead & downtime to just recoup the original repair cost. This is part of what sinks guys.

It does seem too early for a turbo to go bust like that...mine went at 800K...but those turbos with emission systems (I don't know how that would matter) would not last as long as they used to. I am thinking that maybe it is even better to replace those turbos preemptively at a shop of your desire...every 500K - 600K miles, even if nothing seems bad so that towing and a potential greedy shop bill could be avoided.
I mean one cannot count on these to last forever.

Just had a repair bill of around
7.5k Canadian Dollars on Dpf system parts. Luckily, everything except 1k was covered under warranty. The amount does not include labor and Diagnostic.

These emission trucks are no fun.

The emissions engines have what's called a Variable Geometry Turbocharger. Complex, sensitive and expensive. Definitely don't last as long as the older ones. They're required so that they can regulate EGR and make the DPF work like it was supposed to work.

Turns out the turbo was not the issue. It did need a new actuator and rings. The big problem was that the EGR system was totally clogged with sludge. The guy sent me the pictures of everything. He took everything off the motor and put it in a boiling tank he has, at 1700 degrees. This dislodged everything and put it all back together. The crankcase filter was saturated, he replaced that. There are a couple issues left to deal with when I get the truck back to Arkansas based on what the driver is saying. The clutch is about to go out and I’m pretty sure the DPF is full. Summit will foot the bill if the DPF is toast. The DPF is on their “Summit Certified” inspection list. My salesman is not happy with guys at Tulsa, where the truck came from, after all this. The truck went down Friday evening and the driver finally got it back this afternoon. Removing, cleaning, and putting back together the EGR system is very time consuming. This was a fleet truck with a lot of idle time. I took a risk buying one with that much idle time and it bit me. This is why I always recommend APUs on EGR trucks. At idle the EGR system does not get hot enough and condensation mixed with the gasses and soot and forms sludge in the system.

If you don't mind me asking what was the cost for the mechanic to take apart the egr and boil it?

Total cost for everything was 6800.00. There was a lot of labor involved. He kept me in the loop along the way. Yesterday he was on it from 1000 until 0400 today, back on it today at 0900. I was a little annoyed that he started on it and let me know he can’t take cards. That was a huge problem. I got that figured out with some strong words with my bank.

I thought the process was pretty cool he used. He priced the parts from the dealer to just replace it as that would be much faster. The parts alone were 7500.00 so it was cheaper to have him do it his way.

I’m pleased with it so far. The driver has kept me updated since leaving and he says it’s doing good right now.
