@mi38...First off, I am not looking to take on another truck so no soliciting here. I am a dispatch service. A one man show working from home, and wish only to share a bit in effort to help you along.. I got started in the business to help my brother when he went from company driver to O/O - I left my day job, took a night part time work and learned OJT. Yeah, it was "real fun" learning that way! But I realized that I liked the challenge of finding freight: the hunt, the negotiations, etc. So I took on other carriers and became self-employed. What I can share with you is that a dispatch service can be asset should you choose wisely, despite the nay sayers within this site. What we do is time consuming and often tedious, e.g., broker setups which can 20+ pages. There are high-end services upwards of 10% or more of the load rate complete with fuel advances, factoring, roadside service, etc. Me, I charge 3.25% with a $45 minimum. I will find the load, put my heart into getting the best rate I can. Do the setups. Text the dispatch. Do the invoicing. Forward Rate Cons, booked under the carriers name, along with the invoice to the carrier. Everything is under the carriers name, and carrier pay goes directly to the carrier, who later pays me. My job - and that of the service you select, includes making sure they are not sending you into a storm. With GPS, plotting routes is not really necessary, but there will be times when it is necessary to plot and dispatch a route: In crowed or rural areas. To make sure your GPS is not putting you where that truck does not belong. I am the truck's eyes before it arrives looking to avoid prohibited roads. When I put a truck on a long haul, I address to the driver the least expensive fuel stops along the route. Beyond the meat & potatoes, I do the little stuff as well. Your service, like me, must be available 24/7. When I get a 2 a.m. phone call, "I'm lost," I get up, boot-up the computer, and get the driver back en route. This certainly includes those calls that begin with, "I'm broke down." Many of my sleep nights ended at such an hour with such a call. Your service must be much more than just a "Dispatch service." They must be your 911, your 411 - they must be on par with being your most dependable friend! There is not a thing in this for me beyond trying to point you in the right direction while at the same time help out a friend. Talk to @Haulinall, he is in a position to of help to you.
