First question is the wet sleeve liners, and whether the seals at the bottom of the liners, which are just O rings...? are leaking? No indication that anything is leaking, and I understand that you send in an oil sample, but a few questions I have, since the truck has been sitting since August. Do I need to run the engine to stir up the oil or can I just get a sample in for testing, and how much oil is needed to comprise a sample? The truck is a 1993 International with a 360 and less than 225,000 miles. It's the fact that it's 25 years old was my concern with respect to the wet sleeve liner seals. I bought the truck in Hermiston Oregon and drove it home to Sandpoint Idaho. The truck performed beautifully, but needs an oil change right now. In the Spring, I plan on dropping in new batteries and hope the truck starts having sat so long. I topped the fuel tank off, but it was already getting cold before I did top it off. The truck came with a partial jug of ant freeze coolant and there is no doubt that coolant is leaking around the coolant over run tank sight glass. The coolant filter looks fairly recent and so I'm hoping the DCA levels are up to snuff. I was planning on spinning the coolant filter off to see if it still had the "pill" inside or not, but how does one keep from losing all the coolant? It looks as though there is a ball valve near by, but only a shaft sticking out, and not very far either. The shaft does have a hole laterally through it as if it is intended for sticking something through it to turn it? Any input would be appreciated, especially if it puts my mind at ease! Thank you!

Oh yes, this is a Budget rental truck, at one time anyways, and seems well maintained, though I have no idea how long it's been since it was a fleet vehicle. No idea how long Budget would have run the truck before selling it.

Most liners do have 2 or more oring near the bottom of the liner for sealing. Usually oil samples are taken during an oil change, so the oil has been mixed up. It would be best to have it mixed because if anything settles near the bottom from sitting then a sample is taken, the concentration proportions of any contaminates will be incorrect. Our oil sample bottles are about the size of bingo dabber or so.
You should buy a coolant strength test kit that does freeze point and DCA concentration levels. Any filter should never be removed and then reinstalled unless it is brand new. The filters aren't a lot of money, if you suspect it, then just replace it with a new one. There should be a little shut off tap, but chances are it will be seized open. In that case, you just have to be quick!

what makes u think its the liners..just curious.

on my 94 i was loosing coolant quite a bit..and it progressed over the months. i pulled some oil after a days of work and had it sampled and it had crazy amounts of antifreeze in the oil test. i rented a pressure tool from O'Reilly's. drained the oil and dropped the pan and ran the pressure test..and sure enough i seen one of the liners pissing water from the middle of the liner (not from an o ring). pulled all the liners and they had pitting on all of them. ended up doing an in frame rebuild.

pressure test is easy and quick way to see if ur liners are failing

Honestly, I see no indications that the liners or the seals are leaking. I was just curious more than anything. I'm aware of the liner erosion and am kind of biting my nails over that as well. I drove it from Hermiston to home and it hasn't been run since that time.

ah ok. i would turn it on and run it for a little bit. then take a sample and see whats in it. only reason i did this was because im in my truck every day and i knew i was loosing coolant.

Well, the anti freeze jug tells me I'm using it in my truck. It has air conditioning and I ran it while driving it back, about a 5 hour trip and it didn't use any anti freeze pushing it fairly hard. I was just readying myself for at least an in frame rebuilt based on the age of the engine, and not so much the mileage. I need to get that sight glass leak fixed. It had a fairly good amount there, and I believe that's where it's coming from. The radiator looks great.

It runs so fantastic that as you say, I'm not going there unless it does have anti freeze in the oil. Come Spring, I'll fire it up and look in to it. I just need some warmer weather for my 51 year old bones!
