Any one else out there having issues with Rand McNally interfacing with newer Volvo trucks.
We have 6 2018 Volvos that Rand TND760's report incorrect mileage. These are the only trucks out of 200 mixed fleet. All trucks are connected through the fuse box (via Rand McNally's spider cable). We have received multiple stories from Rand McNally, but when pushed, they now need us to bring the truck to their Skokie, Illinois office to capture the raw data. They admit that there is no ETA on a fix though...We are in California, so before we do this, I wanted to check with you all.
    Thanks!

Last message from Rand McNally...after 7 months of run around...we need "ammo" to get any tech help.
Yes, btw, the device pings just fine :) This takes 5 minutes to look up in the web portal - so need for a trip across county...just for ammo...ammo should be our 200+ trucks and $10k in monthly fees...good customer...3 year contract...good customer relations...:( that should be enough ammo to help a client.

    "Good Afternoon Kevin,
If possible I would ask if you could have one of those trucks route here to our Skokie location. The reason is that we’re not seeing this on other 18 Volvos, this would give us the ammo we would need to escalate this. Our Skokie office is located at 9855 woods drive, Skokie IL 60077. If this is possible I would need to know when they would be stopping here.
He followed up with me, he said that we a Dearborn recording in order to further escalate to help us prove the device is pinging. Do these vehicles ever drive through Chicago or salt lake city?
    Best Regards,
    Terren

Who contacted you yesterday? Volvo has to be contacted as Rand is seeing some incorrect data off the port from the truck.

No one new contacted me from Rand McNally. Emails from John Wangles, Aaron Meyers, Terren Page is our Field Rep. I'm in contact with Volvo, but I was unable to get beyond fluff with RM. I wanted to discuss SPNs (which signals the device can accept/use). I am new to the trucking industry but have a computer background. This puts me at an advantage over most ELD users, but emails about needing ammo was a bit discouraging. Our logs have drivers doing 33k...random miles daily since installed. I had a long talk with Terren and asked him to spend a bit more time educating himself on things. I told him that I need better support. (without talks of ammo nor acting like pinging was even close to relevant)
His reply is below. His verbiage is a bit off, but at least he didn't mention ammo.
We did have Telogis fire up the trucks (free demo) and they were able to get accurate odometer readings, so it is possible...just need all party's to be on the same page. Now, I guess, we can skip the trip to Illinois...

    Kevin,
After talking to our head of fleet support and director of hardware and we’ve figured there is a way we can avoid having the truck routed to us. I wanted to ask if you could reach out to Volvo one more time and get this information from them.
They want you to verify with Volvo to see if where they have installed our data connections that the J1939 puts out the odometer on the following PGN

    If they do not:
    · Is there another recommended connection we should make in the truck?
    · On this particular connection, do they use a different PGN to put out the odometer?
We also would like to know what is the data we are getting on this PGN of this connection.

    Best Regards,

    Terren Page

After you send me the info in a conversation, it went to the directors. I was part of the E-Mail flow in regards to this. So, I will get with them and see if they still need you to do anything. No trip to IL needed.

    Thanks Mark.
The below email from Volvo was sent to Terren...unsure if you saw:

The SPN245 is and isn’t supported on the J1939 network. As a rule of thumb the type of engine (Volvo or Cummins) has an impact on the data being supported. For Total Vehicle Distance SPN: 245) the Cummins engine supports the SPN, but the Volvo/Mack engine does not.

Instead we support the HRVD (High Resolution Vehicle Distance) message, which is PGN: 65217, SPN: 917 (High Resolution Total Vehicle Distance). The owner of the signal will come from the Instrument Cluster (SA: 23) – NOT the engine (SA:00). This is what should be used for total vehicle distance.

When it comes to the signal source I’m not sure if you have to set-up/select the SA, or if you have some auto hierarchy, but one thing that you should be aware of is that the Cummins engine (SA: 00) also supports the PGN: 65217, SPN: 917. This means you’ll have 2 nodes sending the 917 and they will most likely not contain the exact same distance.

It's a lot of info for a non-truck engineer (we are a freight carrier company) to understand in order to get our ELD to function

In short the data bus they need that the ELD is looking for is supported on a Cummin's engine, whereas Volvo has a different parameter or data signal.

Rand is looking at how to support the new data signal Volvo has adapted.

This may or may not be an easy fix. Terrance will keep you informed.

    Thanks,
    Mark

That makes sense. Thank you for your time on this. If you hear of any companies that ARE able to get these newish Volvos working with ANY Rand McNally ELD's, please let us know. We are in a 3 year contract so hopefully...
