New owner operator here, quick question if someone can help out. I have a dot number, mc is still not active( 20 days waiting period ), just put in for arizona irp account ( tags, ifta etc. ). I do have valid insurance on the truck though. My question is what do i need to bring a truck i just bought from Houston to Phoenix without waiting for all the paperwork to be completed? Is there a temp permit i can get for Texas, NM and Arizona so I can drive through without getting hassled at the scales? Truck I purchased does not have a plate or any markings on it. Thanks

Call each state DMV. In my state (Illinois) they will issue you a 5 day permit based on the VIN number for $10 bucks. Used just for this purpose of moving an unlicensed vehicle.

I ran mine home with no tags from Idaho to Montana. Passed three scales without pulling in. Had all my insurance the minute I signed the purchase paperwork.

Picked up truck in Dallas, brought home to wi. All taht is needed is bill of sale, insurance on truck, and some signs on door that say "intransit, not for hire" never got stopped once. You usually have 7 day grace period to register truck

Virginia gave me a ticket for not having a temp tag. Dodged the scales rest of the way to Texas. Even picked up a power only on the way home to pay for diesel

Was wondering same thing. Have to bring rig from SC to NC. There is 6 scale houses on the way. Tried to call the DMV but they were no help, to me to call SHP and they told me to call DMV....WTF. I saw on FB a guy saying they made him park his truck at the scale house, gave him a hearty ticket, and he had to have his rig transported from there the rest of the way..... Any suggestions out there????

Try a different DMV clerk. All you need is insurance and a temp tag. Explain to them you just purchased a new vehicle and don't mention anything about trucking, scales, permits etc or you might confuse them

Calling each state is a waist of time. The k my state that matters is your home state.

Baught mine outside Harrisburg PA and drove it home to Allentown PA with "Not for hire" signs on the door, the bill of sale, and temp insurance. In PA you can't even register a CMV without having an letter of "intent to hire" to show it will be put to work.

Than drove it the same way all the way to Chicago when I signed on to a company. No plates, not for hire on the doors, and just temp insurance. Had no issues, even with officers sitting on the side of the highway or passing me.

Few months later I quit that company to get my own authority and drove it back home to Allentown PA the same way.
