Like I told the nurse when I was there. I'm a Florida native, been there since I was 5, we don't get temps below 60 in the winter. When I got to tn we had snow storm after snow storm with temps in the teens. I got sick before I went to orientation and was running a fever, they took my temp there at the facility as well and because it was 2 degrees off they wanted to make me do it all over.

Someone may certainly have said it, the whole industry is cutthroat. Leaving is a refusal.

With that said, I am more worried about your wife and children than some silly refusal problem you did not know about. Excepting that you might not be hire able for a while. I think a refusal will be treated as same as a hot test positive sending people into SAP, draining them even more of money and time etc with the purpose of seriously running them off the road and out of the CDL if they intended to continue on drugging and driving. If that is not you, then you will be back on the road at some point.

I say this for a future reference. The next time you go into Orientation, designate a trusted family member to take those kinds of calls. Do not let anyone bother you in a orientation process. I once got seriously sick in a hurry and was shipped to the hospital in Dallas. Spouse was doing Orientation at the same time and location, I just went quietly not to interrupt her. When the hospital kicked me out saying they cannot find or fix anything immediate, I made a phone call to night dispatch and got back with the worried spouse and she was able to complete.

The industry has changed and not for the better thanks to a society intent on drugging and driving a semi tractor trailer that is usually 6 seconds from killing someones. No tolerance is the rule here. Its not you personally. It is what it is.

Yeah so now I gotta worry about how to pay my bills. I had no back up plan and thought my cdl would support me. But now I gotta go look for whatever will take me and hope that I'll get hired on when I do all this bs. Be a trucker they say it'll be easy they say ,yeah ok

When I had to do randoms, I told my wife, do not call me even if the kids are dying. I can't be bothered with any of that.

Dude, no one said it was easy, as much as I feel sorry for you, the truth is that this industry sucks. It sucks because of the people in it who screwed around and ruined it for everyone and those who kept their mouths shut. You should always have a backup plan but remember that there are still driving jobs around without the need of a CDL.

No it's not. Might want to actually look at the law before spouting off. Took all of 1 minute to find....
DOT Rule 49 CFR Part 40 Section 40.65

    (b) Temperature. You must check the temperature of the specimen no later than four minutes after the employee has given you the specimen.

    (1) The acceptable temperature range is 32–38 °C/90–100 °F.

    (2) You must determine the temperature of the specimen by reading the temperature strip attached to the collection container.

    (3) If the specimen temperature is within the acceptable range, you must mark the “Yes” box on the CCF (Step 2).

    (4) If the specimen temperature is outside the acceptable range, you must mark the “No” box and enter in the “Remarks” line (Step 2) your findings about the temperature.

    (5) If the specimen temperature is outside the acceptable range, you must immediately conduct a new collection using direct observation procedures (see §40.67).

    (6) In a case where a specimen is collected under direct observation because of the temperature being out of range, you must process both the original specimen and the specimen collected using direct observation and send the two sets of specimens to the laboratory. This is true even in a case in which the original specimen has insufficient volume but the temperature is out of range. You must also, as soon as possible, inform the DER and collection site supervisor that a collection took place under direct observation and the reason for doing so.

    (7) In a case where the employee refuses to provide another specimen (see §40.191(a)(3) ) or refuses to provide another specimen under direct observation (see §40.191(a)(4) ), you must notify the DER. As soon as you have notified the DER, you must discard any specimen the employee has provided previously during the collection procedure.

Well that's nice to know, glad we're treated one step below sub human scum now.

Would it be too inconsiderate to ask the observer to hold the cup? I think I would accidentally start spraying everywhere.. sorry but I got a little nervous and couldn't stop :-(

Thank you everyone for your responses, I got frustrated earlier. I'm going to come up with the money to see a sap counselor then find a small company to get my foot in the door. Will post updates as time goes on.
