What he said. There’s a certain amount of money I need to have for every day I work. It’s not about the miles, it’s about how much time I have tied up in that load. If it takes a day to tarp it, I WANT MY DAY RATE. If it takes a day to load it, I WANT MY DAY RATE. If the customer needs me to sit on the load for a period of time, I WANT MY DAY RATE.

True, the more miles you run, the more days you are under a load, but if the load is going 150 miles yet is going to eat up the entire day to load and unload, I WANT MY DAY RATE.

“But Six, my company pays on a mileage base...how do you do a day rate if you’re paid mileage?”

Simple, add everything up. You need to run 666 miles a day to make $300 at $.45/mile. You need 600 at $.50/mile. Taping and detention should be enough to compensate the drop in miles. Every day I work, I want the day rate.

“ What if you are broke down?”

If I am broke down (company truck), I am not working. I do not expect my day rate. We can negotiate. The last time I broke down as a company schmuck, they paid me $120/days plus the room. I sat for 3.5 weeks.

Don’t look at a per mile rate. CPM is not the best meausre of income. Revenue is the measure. I know what I want on a weekly and monthly basis as a minimum. Know what kind of time and work is involved in the loads pulled.
Set a day, week, month or yearly number as the goal. Then work for that. 425 to 475 a day is a good goal

No, it's much more complicated than just miles or rate. It's all about workload and time.I am speaking from a company driver POV.

That depends on where you drive and what kind of work you do.
I am doing perfect run right now. Chicago IL- Albuquerque NM (2 stops on Monday am) then to Las Vegas NV for Tuesday am (1 stop),reload and back to Chicago.
Trailer was preloaded, didn't even have to weight it (load 18k # :p).Truck governeded @75 mph and I can floor it if I want or need to.
Total 4200 miles trip,I expect it to take 6-6.5 days to complete. Estimated pay for the trip 2500$.
    What's not to like?:)

I'm not driving the east coast for $1 a mile.
I wish my wages were higher, but every time I see mountains and ,desert ,a big smile comes to my face.
    Less population,smoother roads,75 mph speed limits,open road.
40 cpm is fine with me,although, I'll have my house paid off in 5 years..retiring and going home to drink beer and smoke weed all day!
