What can I do in the meantime while I wait for school to start?

I've been accepted into a private training school. ( 5th Wheel near Toronto)

I've been watching a lot of instructional and lifestyle vids on youtube.

I don't have access to an actual tractor so I'm a virgin when it comes
to the mechanical aspect of trucking. :p

I've been scouring the trucker message boards trying to soak up all the pertinent info.

I've got my physical completed and my driver abstract.

I've been researching and documenting Canadian carriers ( especially the
ones that take on new hires.)

I'm waiting for tuition funding approval.

Anybody want to mentor me?

It's killing me that I have to wait. I want to be proactive.
Needless to say I'm pretty stoked to get this new chapter of my
life underway as an OTR trucker.

I’m glad your positive. The industry is changing, not in a good way. Wages are way lower than they should be. If your ok with living in your truck 30 days a month, you will be fine.

I've always been a traveler. Been around the world twice with a backpack but the last 20 years I dedicated to raising my kids and being a dad. Now that they are in college and independent I can hit the road again. Nothing is tethering me to my current residence so I can dedicate all my attention to the job. If I was wealthy I'd just buy an RV but I'm not so OTR is plan B. I'm a minimalist and a loner so I think I have the personality for the job. I'm not afraid of hard work if it gets me closer to my goal. Which is saving enough $ to retire somewhere warm year round.

How it is for me, I got my license last June. School basically is mostly for getting your license and that is what you need to focus on. They will cover during training the points that local examiners will be looking at. If you get your license hopefully you find a company with a good training plan because the learning is just beginning and getting used to the hours will be tough. The money is good if you overlook the fact that your working way more ours than you probably ever did before in your life so the hourly average will be low.
Being a paid tourist is ok but you will be seeing the world at 100 kph and concentrating on the road more than you ever have before.
Practice holding your pee and get ready to lose what ever physical conditioning you have. Enjoy!

Good time to start training .. You get the whole summer to get used to the vehicle before winter rolls around again... Best advice I received in the 90’s was Learn to get good before I Learned how to go fast... I know it’s the culture in that area to follow close but it’s a very unsafe thing to do in a transport..Good luck in your new adventure you seem to have a good attitude hopefully you can keep it ... PS look up smith system it’s the best way to drive any vehicle
