They had a ski resort out there that had an avalanche. Plus, during the peak of the storm, their wind gauge at the summit of one of the mountains reported a gust in the 100's. Let's see, Cali has earthquakes, massive wildfires, landslides, avalanches, CARB and Hollywood liberals. And people think living in FL with the snakes, gators and hurricanes is crazy...living in Cali it twice as dangerous. :D

Next week will be my one year anniversary here at FCC, so I thought I would write a year end review. This may be lengthy, so I apologize in advance. This is my opinion of the long haul fleet, things on the regional fleets may differ, but this is my observations over the last year.

OPERATIONS- I love our customer base, in the last year I have only had to deal with grocery type warehouses twice, so that includes having to deal with the lumpers and detention. In the three times I had to put in for detention, I was eventually paid what I was owed. Here they don’t pay the driver until they collect from the customer. On the two occasions I asked to be compensated for layover pay, I was paid without question. Both times I delivered early in the morning, but couldn’t reload until the following day. I am preplanned about 95% of the time, but I have never waited more than hour when not preplanned on my next load. About 90% of what I do is drop and hook, if I do live load or unload I am usually in and out within two hours.

EQUIPMENT- they’re trucks are well equipped and well maintained. The tractors have APUs, refrigerators, inverters, and flat screen mounts. They have two shops, one at the main terminal in Fremont, and another shop in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They expect the trucks to be greased and lubed every 8K miles at one of the terminals. This can sometimes be a pain, but I understand why they do it. Trailers are serviced on a 3 month schedule, and for the most part are in good shape. I always call ahead and give the shop foreman an eta, I have always gotten in and out in a reasonable amount of time. Both shops in my opinion are the two most efficient company shops I have ever dealt with.

MILES- I normally stay out a month (my choice), but where I live I knew when I hired on I had to stay out a minimum of 3 weeks. Last quarter I ran 39,115 miles, my year end mileage will be 153,069 miles. My first 6 months here I was a company driver and made $32,586.76. After 6 months I switched to the L/P program.

L/P PROGRAM- this is not a walk away lease, they won’t just let anyone with a heartbeat lease a truck. I personally know two guys who were turned down for various reasons. They don’t push the lease on company drivers. They usually put you in a truck with 250K miles on it. They will go through the truck and go over a check list. If you find anything else you want taken care of, they will fix it, no questions asked. They do a DPF system service, and put in a new filter in before you sign the lease. Built into the lease is an extended warranty once the manufacturer warranty runs out. My fixed costs every week are
$815.00 this includes truck payment, bobtail/physical damage /cargo damage insurance, health/dental/life insurance, highway usage tax, Qualcomm/prepass rental. I have no regrets, and do very well since switching to the lease. FCC has a great fuel discount program, we get the national average on fuel surcharge, plus a pump discount at various retailers. If you do your research and check the fuel discount, sometimes I end up paying as little as .17 a gallon with an average of 7mpg, with the pump discount and fuel surcharge.

BONUS PROGRAM- On the company side you are eligible for a .04 quarterly bonus that is very achievable. It’s paid out on all miles run for the quarter on a separate check. As an O/O or L/P driver you are eligible for a .01 quarterly bonus.

On the long haul fleet I am able to run the way I want. I normally start my day about 0200 and can shut down about 1500. I don’t fight for a place to park, I can tweek my start my time to avoid major metropolitan areas and rush hour. Now that construction season is around the corner, I will probably do a lot more night driving.

In closing, I am the happiest I have been in years driving a truck. I wish I would have come over here years ago, and plan on being here for years to come.

Swung into the Council Bluffs yard for a service, knocking out some laundry while I wait for my 10 to be up. I will drop this load in Broken Bow, Nebraska and then pick up a preloaded trailer going right back down to Sumter for a drop on Thursday.

I’m in the Broken Bow to Sumter vortex, third turn in a row and will probably get another one because I have home time scheduled next week. Miles are good though, 1390 each direction.

I haven’t found a cookie dealer yet, my wife is on a health kick, and didn’t buy the normal 12 boxes this year.

Since I Left the house on the 26th of February, I’ve run 7502 paid miles in 13 days and that includes a 34 reset. FCC keeps me loaded and rolling.
