I was going to a fuel stop in Denver and was on an icy street near the T/A when I got stuck on an ice patch at a stop light. I let out on the clutch and it spun for a second or two, caught, and...SNAP. Broke a U joint on the ice. Got towed to the FL in Brighton, Colorado, where I proceeded to sit for 4 1/2 days waiting on parts and the repair. Was told I wouldn't get any breakdown pay, as I was told it could have been my fault. I objected and told the truth...it was a mere patch of ice, and I had to get out of there. During the repair, I was told by the FL dealer's techs that the U joint didn't have any lubrication, meaning it probably snapped because of their neglect. I let the Crete breakdown rep at the Lincoln headquarters know this, but heard nothing back. My terminal assistant manager told me they would have a sort of 'hearing' to decide if it was my fault, my report of what happened be ######. I figured this ruling would either get me the breakdown pay or not. How naive I was. After a month long wait, where I was out driving for these jokers the whole time, I had the bomb dropped on me. I was going to have to pay for the parts, labor, and tow bill, a total of over 5,200 dollars. I had no say in the tow company, the repair shop, the parts, or the length of time for the repair. I was down for 4 1/2 days with no breakdown pay, plus I wasn't running making money then. That's the "new" Crete. Of course, I'm not paying this nonsense and have left the outfit. I advise anyone thinking of going to work for Crete in the future to rethink your prospects. What they will do to me, they will do to YOU. Stay away from Crete, my fellow drivers. They've gone way down since Mr Acklie passed away.

Unbelievable! What has the Trucking industry became? So now,when you spin on ice and Snap an old U joint...they dock you 5 days pay and charge you 5200 bones?What about all the "money" they made off your back in the past?

Paul Harvey and I are waiting for "the rest of the story" I find it hard to believe a 1-2 second spin would break a u- joint. I could be wrong, but seems it would take much more than that. Maybe if that 1-2 second spin was at 50mph, lol.

Yeah.. I'd bet that spin was a "romp to the floor" that eased onto dry pavement.

I don't know if this is a company driver or a lease driver.

Also coming off ice onto solid surface while spinning will damage something. I think enough fuel is applied with quite a bit of power to find that weak spot which then snapped.

We used to carry spares U joints for the older trucks. Whatever happened to 5 days sitting around? Worst case scenario, drop the new joint in and go. I hate to be difficult. Especially these days when no driver should be a mechanic...

And I hope none of those piles of papers you signed at orientation will contain the necessary legalese you will now pay the 5200 in billing and so forth. takes me a couple hours to read and sign all those stacks of papers usually. Any one of them could be a deal breaking mine field detonating the possibility of continuing on working there.

Some unsophisticated (not necessarily OP) NEVER read contracts. Proof? Lease purchase fails and reposessed doublewides.

UPDATE.....Crete wants me to hire back on IF I pay half of the 5600. Nope. Wasn't my fault. Let me talk this down using common sense. Stay tuned. DAC report reads "eligible for rehire". Plus I have zero tickets and zero accidents on my driving record. I have some clout. To anyone out there reading this, let me give you some adivce--do what I'll do if Crete comes around on this. I won't sign anything that binds me to them. I'll agree on the "fee" and pay that. My max is about 700. IF I were to sign a form / indentured servitude contract, I'd be Mr New York City, Mr Los Angeles, Mr Chicago, with no way to quit. I'd have no choice but go to those places. No way. I'll pay them all of it up front and then go back to driving for them. And if they still insist on me paying 2800 of it, I'll tell them to go to hell. There are too many outfits out there looking for drivers (most of which suck, but they all do now anyway) to be chained down.
