    Phone calls,.. lots of them.

As with anything in this world,.. the longer you do something,.. the more people you meet who are in the same thing. Phones calls,.. networking,.. more phone calls.

Brokers know other brokers,.. as do other O/O's. Not everyone will divulge the secret ingredients to their coolaid. But over time,.. you will learn the secrets.

So when is the right time to step out on your own? I'm a newbie looking to take a doc position at Old Dominion and then enter their driver training school to become a driver for them. Can make from between 60-90k driving for OD depending upon whether or not you are driving P&D or Line-haul.

Should I do the OD gig for a while or step out on my own from the beginning? When is the right time to step out on own?

I consider myself a decent business man. I earned my bachelors degree in business. Would be fun to put it to the test and actually run my own trucking business.

I cant give you an honest answer for that. Thats something you need to decide on your own.

Driving is the easy part. Getting a truck is easy. Knowing how to find the right kind of work that you want to do and make a decent living at it takes time. Learning rates, learning freight, learning the market, learning where and how to find work, learning the people, learning the permits, licensing, registrations, IRP, all comes from experience.

I'd like to be able to tell you that going to work driving for a large company will help prepare you for being an O/O but it wont. It will how ever give you the time in the seat that you will need to master your driving skills.

Personally I would go to work for OD. Make a living and see if you feel the same about trucking in 2 - 3 yrs from now. Deciding to become an O/O is a business choice,.. not an occupational choice. Do not confuse the two.
