Truck registered in NJ can Run Under CT authority?

If he is an independent contractor with his own truck, he can register it himself in New Jersey using your proof of liability insurance. If he does this and decides to switch to a new company, he keeps his plates. Otherwise he is out $2,000...

 

I mean the state will probably have a form they want the insurance company to fill out with the truck's vin etc, but the insurance company need not be in state.

Then again, it is new jersey...

 

This is how the system is setup to work, we work under federal regulations that allow a truck in nj to be in a fleet in CT. The states have agreed to allow this to happen because they can't regulate interstate commerce which is exclusively a federal thing.

Insurance doesn't matter where it comes from, the owner certificate - aka title - doesn't matter what state it is held in, as long as the legal requirements are met with the proper insurance.

Many times people make this too complicated when it is not.

The real issue of insurance comes from the authority, the responsible entity of the load. There has to be insurance on that load from that entity only by the regulations. If he has his own insurance for the truck, then all he has to do is give you proof of that for your records.

 

IRP is different than regular registration, although it is processed through the state DMV. If you are a motor carrier and have operating authority, that in itself is proof of insurance. To register in NJ, your owner operator will need a copy of the lease, copy of his title, and unique to NJ, the title must be from NJ as well as proof that he paid the 2290. Because you are a motor carrier, your insurance already is on file.

 

The company I'm leased on with in PA has an O/O with NJ plates leased on here as well. So, I know it can be done.
