Looks like traffic was stopped for the light and backed beyond the bridge in the one lane

No doubt there is a few engineers and visionary leaders somewhere sick to their stomach and contemplating suicide. They will try and blame the construction company and the construction company will blame the engineering firm.

Seems like this was a rushed project from what I can gather. (about a year ahead of schedule)

Was supposed to survive the worst possible hurricane (Cat 5) ... okay

 

Also seems the bridge construction was still in the finishing touches phase. But also seems either a key construction assembly step was missed, or bad material spec'ing, or bad engineering/design concept or any combination

 

There's a dude on Fox News who says there was a crane team doing final work on the bridge in the moments before the collapse. He actually says he saw the crane get hung up on some cable and something fell onto the bridge and this caused the collapse. That would make sense but why would they be performing final work during a busy work day and without closing the road. All work should have been completed during the initial setup IMO. But this is what happens when you have city and university leaders pressing for quick openings and to make the ideal news cycles. No doubt there were a number of expensive "celebration dinners" over the weekend by city and university leaders.

I was wondering how the hell a crane got there so fast.
