This guy had an initial delete done that seemed to work fine. But there was no mpg improvement or power gain. He later had it tuned at another place that cranked it up. He said it was a barrel of monkeys to drive after that. Then a short while later the liner went.
One article I read said that if the stronger tune involved cranking up the amount of fuel being injected too high, then the excess fuel can wash past the piston rings, displacing the oil, causing hot spots on the liner resulting in cracks and failure of the liner.

You're a fool if you think it cost that much to overhaul you can buy another truck for that price

Many of these guys doing deletes have no business near a motor. There are guys out there than can and do do them successfully, but they know what they are doing. Most of these delete shops plate off, remove and replace working components, then get in the ECM and check off everything related to the emission system. Then the truck owner wonders why he melted a piston and took out his crank. There is more to this than just checking a few boxes and or "tricking" a motor to do something it is not designed to do. Thousands of these stories out here.
