UPDATE: Channelview ISD confirms the tour bus that crashed into a ravine in Alabama this morning was carrying band students from Channelview High School.

A family member tells KHOU 11 the high schoolers were from Channelview and on their way back home to Texas after a trip to Disney, but Channelview ISD has not yet confirmed this information.

LOXLEY, Ala. (AP) - Authorities in Alabama say a charter tour bus carrying students on a school trip from Houston, Texas, has plunged into a ravine, with multiple injuries reported.

Baldwin County Sheriff's Office Major Anthony Lowery said the bus plunged off Interstate 10 into a deep ravine Tuesday morning, and multiple helicopters are responding

WKRG-TV is reporting that 12 to 20 people have been injured, and that officials say the bus was returning to Houston from a school trip.

WEAR-TV reports that the charter bus was carrying at least 52 people and the crash happened around 6 a.m.

Sheriff Huey Moss Mack says both lanes on the interstate have been closed. Traffic has been diverted and Alabama State troopers are asking people to avoid the area.

1 fatality, the driver, and 1 critical. There have been unconfirmed reports of the driver having had a heart attack prior to running off the road between the two bridges.

Maybe but color me skeptical. Occurred in the pre-dawn hours. Really? No doubt the driver had been driving nonstop probably since 9 or 10 pm the night before.

I will never trust another driver past 3 or 4 hours in the nighttime hours. And again, remember. We did this stupid daylight savings time change a few days ago.

That is the one thing I fear with busses. Taking a nap and then finding out your down a rvine or worse in a river.
Tho it could have been much worse.

Yeah and who knows if he was actually able to get proper rest that afternoon and evening.

I don't know if he was with the tour group from start to finish or was just brought in for the return trip.

from what they said on the news, they were to stop in Mobile, about 45 more minutes west, to meet the relief driver. Preliminary autopsy said cause of death was from blunt force trauma but they wouldn't rule out a medical issue causing the driver to go into the median until after a full autopsy.
